The Arkansas Derby is typically a chance for the public to find a favorite for the Kentucky Derby that is just a few weeks away. This year, it’s a bit more complicated.
Muth took home the victory in the 2024 Arkansas Derby, finishing with a blazing time of 1:49.54.

Arkansas Derby Order of Finish
1. Muth – Win: $6.60 Place: $5.00 Show: $3.80
2. Just Steel – Place: $16.20 Show: $6.80
3. Mystik Dan – Show: $3.60
It was Muth’s first race of the year and his first victory since October 2023 at the American Pharoah Stakes. His jockey, Juan Jose Hernandez, said Muth made the run easy.

“All the credit is for my horse,” Hernandez said. “He was so game today.”
Of course, the main story revolves around trainer Bob Baffert. The winner of the Arkansas Derby would normally receive 100 points towards the Kentucky Derby. However, due to Baffert’s three-year suspension from the race, Muth will not be participating.
The points instead will not be awarded to any horse, and Muth will focus on taking home the victory at the Preakness, which is set for May 18.
The Kentucky Derby will take place May 4.
