Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale said Arsenal had put down a “marker” by ending their eight-match losing run against Manchester City with a last-gasp equaliser and victory on penalties to lift the Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.
Leandro Trossard replied to Cole Palmer’s exquisite second-half strike with a deflected shot 11 minutes into added time in the pre-season showpiece at Wembley Stadium, setting up a shootout in which City playmaker Kevin De Bruyne hit the crossbar, Ramsdale saved Rodri’s kick and Arsenal midfielder Fabio Vieira scored the winning penalty.
“It’s a statement to us that we can go and beat them,” said Ramsdale, who was part of a squad knocked off the top of the Premier League by eventual champions City with five games remaining in 2022-23, speaking to ITV Sport.

“It’s a marker to know we can beat City in a big game when it matters. I’m not sure what it will be like going through the season but we now have that mental block gone and we’re ready to push on.”
A UEFA Under-21 EURO winner with England, Palmer looked set to continue his glorious summer when he collected a header from fellow substitute De Bruyne, steadied himself inside the penalty area and curled into the far corner 13 minutes from time, leaving Ramsdale with no chance and City manager Pep Guardiola leaping for joy.
Arsenal had the only attempts on target of the first half when new signing Kai Havertz twice went close, but Ramsdale rescued them from falling further behind twice in quick succession late on, keeping out Phil Foden’s shot and clawing Rodri’s header off the line from the ensuing corner.

City defended deeper as the sizeable allocation of added time approached, and Trossard was rewarded when he won space with a feint on the edge of the box before sending in an opportunistic effort that was deflected past Stefan Ortega in the Cityzens’ goal by Manuel Akanji.
Captain Martin Odegaard, Trossard and Bukayo Saka preceded Vieira in scoring in the shootout for the victors, with Arsenal’s 17 Community Shield wins making them the outright second-most successful team in the history of the competition, four behind record holders Manchester United.
Bernardo Silva was the only player to score a penalty for City as manager Pep Guardiola lost against his former assistant, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, for the first time and suffered only a second defeat to Arsenal in more than six years.
Guardiola’s side begin their top-flight title defence at newly-promoted Burnley on Friday, while Arsenal host Nottingham Forest in the first game of Saturday’s Premier League fixtures.
Record signing Rice ‘buzzing’
There were new arrivals aplenty in a game given extra edge by that close-run title race between these two teams, with Arsenal record signing Declan Rice arguably the most high-profile alongside defender Jurrien Timber and forward Havertz, as well as midfielder Mateo Kovacic for City.
Josko Gvardiol completed his move to the six-time Community Shield winners on Saturday but was not part of a defence with precious little to do as City kept 85% of possession during the opening 15 minutes and bossed the first 30.
Once Arsenal found a foothold in the game, Havertz forced the first meaningful save by swiveling to test Ortega on the turn after Ben White found him in front of goal, only for the usual understudy to Ederson to deny him with a foot.
John Stones used his chest to bravely block Gabriel Martinelli’s lashed strike from the rebound, and it wasn’t long before Arsenal’s £65 million ($82.9m) arrival from Chelsea threatened again in a better position and more space.
Saka cut a pass back to the Germany international from the same right flank as part of an incisive Arsenal move, but Havertz’s low finish was not as firm as it should have been and Ortega produced another fine reflex stop to parry the ball away.
With Arsenal fans absorbing the prospect of a fourth defeat to City this calendar year, substitute Trossard tried his luck with a drive that Akanji unwittingly diverted beyond the grounded Ortega. The goal was confirmed after a brief VAR check, and within minutes the destiny of the shield had swung entirely.
“It’s what I envisioned on joining the club,” said Rice of the silverware, describing himself as “absolutely buzzing”. “Every time you play against City, you never know what to expect. We created some really good chances and had a bit of luck in the end.
“It’s just having the patience against them. The manager said it’s like a loads of mini games rolled into one. They move and change so much. To win that today – it’s my first trophy for this club, we’re buzzing.
“I’m so happy. I’ve grown so much in the first three weeks I’ve been here. It’s been a lot of information to take in about what the manager wants. I’m eager to learn and keep improving. Everyone’s so together.”
Palmer proves promise again
No team is likely to test Rice’s energy-sapping role in front of Arsenal’s defence more than City, and an error from the ex-West Ham skipper led to Julian Alvarez locating Stones with a corner in one of the first attacks of the game.
Stones did admirably to meet the ball in a bustling penalty area and plant a header straight at Ramsdale, meeting a delivery that had narrowly evaded Erling Haaland – the subject of Rice’s marking and a striker on a stretch of six games without a goal after being substituted less than 20 minutes into the second half.
The 2022-23 Premier League top scorer had touched the ball 12 times fewer than any of his team-mates and gone without any touches inside the penalty area, where he scored all but one of his 52 goals last season.
Palmer made the case again for greater involvement in a side now shorn of Riyad Mahrez by justifying the change in spectacular style.
“Pep told me to be myself,” the City academy product said afterwards, reflecting on a goal afforded by his composure to shift the ball to his left, putting Timber off balance and giving himself more of an angle to bend the ball around Gabriel’s attempted block. “I came inside, saw the far corner and it went in.”
City’s closest shot until then had flirted with the extraordinary. Rodri rattled Ramsdale before the break with an audacious shot from the halfway line that looked goalbound before dropping onto the roof of the net, which the backtracking England international ended up tangled in.
The new officiating focus on minor infringements – evidenced during many of the opening games of the EFL season over the weekend – was also occasionally in evidence.
Thomas Partey and Julian Alvarez were cautioned early on for kicking the ball away, causing Mikel Arteta to respond with typically animated ire at his player’s punishment. The Arsenal manager, in turn, was booked for his reaction by referee Stuart Attwell.
The Sporting News followed the match live and provided updates and highlights.

FULLTIME: Arsenal 1-1 Man City
It wasn’t quite the last kick of the game, but that deflected Leandro Trossard strike means penalties in the Community Shield!
City looked in control after that terrific Cole Palmer goal. Arsenal threw more men forward as added time approached and Trossard’s gamble paid off.
“We’ve seen the reaction from both sets of players and the managers,” says Manchester United legend Roy Keane on ITV Sport. “They’re both desperate to win.”
90+11 mins: GOAL – Arsenal 1-1 Man City (Leandro Trossard)
Trossard’s corner is a tricky one, swinging under the crossbar. Rodri looks to have cleared City’s lines with a header at the near post, but Arsenal find Trossard again, whose feint earns him space outside the penalty area in the right channel.
The Belgium midfielder drills a shot towards goal, taking a deflection off Manuel Akanji and diverting past Stefan Ortega!
90+10 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Arsenal win a corner on the left as we enter the 10th minute of added time. Last chance?
90+6 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Man City are on course to win a ninth meeting in a row against Arsenal.
90+3 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Kyle Walker and Thomas Partey, rather worryingly, are down and receiving treatment for head injuries.
Pep Guardiola is making a point to the officials. Both players are having their heads significantly bandaged.
90 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
There will be eight minutes of added time – we seem to be set for sizeable amounts of it this season, if this game and yesterday’s EFL action are anything to go by.
88 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira come on for Kai Havertz and Gabriel for Arsenal.
86 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Cole Palmer had given Arsenal a warning with an attempt from that kind of range earlier. With Riyad Mahrez leaving the club this summer, he’s certainly staked his claim to become an important attacking option at just 21 years old.
83 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Ramsdale stops Rodri’s header from the subsequent corner!
Arsenal are living dangerously. You suspect this game would be beyond their reach if City score a second so late on.
82 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
So nearly a goal for Phil Foden! Julian Alvarez takes three Arsenal players out of the game with a diagonal run into the penalty area, then slips a low pass to the well-positioned midfielder.
Ramsdale blocks his finish with the inside of a thigh just when the England international was celebrating.
79 mins: Arsenal 0-1 Man City
Cole Palmer’s memorable summer has just got better. The UEFA EURO Under-21 winner with England picked up a header from Kevin De Bruyne just inside the Arsenal penalty area on City’s right, steadied himself and curled a delightful finish beyond Aaron Ramsdale’s dive and into the far corner of the net.
Kieran Tierney, who’d just come on for Jurrien Timber, slipped to the turf in front of Palmer as he tried to stop him from shooting, but it would have been immaterial. Gabriel was the nearest man to the shot, which was too accurate to be blocked.
Glorious effort from the substitute to put City ahead.
77 mins: GOAL – Arsenal 0-1 Man City (Cole Palmer)
Exquisite strike!
74 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
An Arsenal change: Leandro Trossard replaces Gabriel Martinelli. The Brazil international has had the joint-most touches in the City box today alongside Bukayo Saka (5).
71 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Phil Foden swings in a corner after a Cole Palmer shot takes a touch off Jurrien Timber on its way over the crossbar. Ben White deals with the danger.
68 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Ben White fires in a cross from the right. Bukayo Saka can’t apply a clean contact on it, and neither can Thomas Partey. A huge roar of anticipation goes up from the Arsenal fans, who are obliging Martin Odegaard’s call for more volume.
67 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Erling Haaland had 13 touches in total – 12 fewer than the City player with the next-lowest figures, Julian Alvarez.
64 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Two more changes for Manchester City: Erling Haaland goes a sixth game without scoring as Cole Palmer comes on for him, while newcomer Mateo Kovacic is supplanted by Kevin De Bruyne.
62 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Martin Odegaard tries to orchestrate the Arsenal fans, twisting his hand in the air in a mildly curious way of asking for them to raise their voices.
Bukayo Saka wins the ball on the right and sends Declan Rice through the centre, in turn releasing Gabriel Martinelli on the right.
Martinelli plays a pass back to Rice, and the club record signing blazes a shot high over the target.
60 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Gabriel Martinelli’s whipped cross from the free-kick is a touch too long for any of his targets.
58 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Phil Foden replaces Jack Grealish for City. Then Ruben Dias takes a heavy touch near his own penalty area and ends up stomping on Bukayo Saka, who descends wincing.
Free-kick to Arsenal in a promising position on the right.
55 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Arsenal are yet to add to the opportunities they had during the first half.

52 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Declan Rice gets caught in possession, City winning a corner on the right from the ensuing attack.
Erling Haaland is jostling with Declan Rice in the middle of the penalty area, but it’s John Stones behind them who manages to jump under pressure from Thomas Partey and plant a header straight at Aaron Ramsdale, who parries away with reasonable comfort.
Martin Odegaard is receiving some attention, allowing both managers to summon their players over for instructions. Mikel Arteta and Pep Guardiola both have plenty to say and gesticulate about, by the looks of it.
49 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
It’s been a quiet start to the half. Martin Odegaard performs some trickery to advance beyond the halfway line for Arsenal, playing a forward pass to Kai Havertz, whose touch is too heavy.
Ruben Dias intervenes but goes down in pain. It looks like he’ll be OK, though.
46 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Some high-profile banter between the teams as they re-emerge: Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko, who’s out with a calf problem, was having a laugh and a joke with City’s usual number one, Ederson, before being playfully shoved in the back by Jack Grealish.
The Cityzens’ players clearly hold Zinchenko in fond regard, as do their fans and manager.
HALFTIME: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Kai Havertz twice went closest to becoming the first current squad member to score for Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, testing Stefan Ortega on both occasions as part of an attack that looks as entertaining as it did for much of last season, even in the absence of Gabriel Jesus.
That they didn’t score from their chances will be a source of regret if City can find the cutting edge to accompany their usual dominance of possession. Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez have been quiet by their standards, with Rodri going closest with an audacious effort from the halfway line.
44 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Julian Alvarez breaks free on the right and flashes a low ball across goal. It narrowly evades a City boot, and William Saliba intercepts by the far post.
43 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Rodri takes aim from an outrageous distance a fraction beyond the halfway line, arcing a shot over the backtracking Aaron Ramsdale and onto the roof of the net, which the goalkeeper ends up tangled in.
Shades of Nayim against Arsenal in the 1995 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final, there. “I don’t know why goalkeepers don’t wear caps,” says Lee Dixon, who took part in that game and is claiming that the sun impeded Ramsdale.
42 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
City have had around 70% of possession but both shots on target have been Arsenal’s through Kai Havertz, with Stefan Ortega twice called in to quick-thinking action.
39 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard combine on the right, then Arsenal spread the play across to Gabriel Martinelli on the left.
Gabriel tries to find Kai Havertz with a low ball through the centre. It’s not particularly accurate, but Havertz’s chase keeps the attack alive, and Arsenal move the ball out to Saka on his flank again.
Saka enters the penalty area on the right and cuts a low pass back to Havertz in space, who fizzes in a low shot which is excellently saved by Stefan Ortega, coming to City’s rescue again by parrying the effort away.
36 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
A familiar sight on the Wembley green: Bukayo Saka picks up a pass on the edge of the penalty area on the right, cuts inside and curls in a shot before his marker can intercept.
Manuel Akanji and Jack Grealish were in attendance, and the effort flies beyond John Stones in the centre of the penalty area, as well as the far post.
34 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Gabriel Martinelli – perhaps for the first time today – beats Kyle Walker on the left and sends in a cross. John Stones takes a swing at it, sending it behind.
Martinelli then hangs his delivery beyond everyone and behind. Wasteful.
33 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
A little sloppiness from Stefan Ortega presents Arsenal with a corner on their right. Manuel Akanji meets the cross with a header, and Bernardo Silva lofts a clearance away.
This has become a more even game than it looked like being when City monopolised possession early on.
32 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Julian Alvarez is booked for kicking the ball away. There’s no doubt it is an irritating feature of the game, but it’s odd to see the officials making such a big point of it.
30 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Like any defence facing City, Aaron Ramsdale and his backline have to be on their toes when they have the ball today.
There’s a nervy moment for the Arsenal goalkeeper as he takes a slightly heavy touch on a pass, rolling the ball worryingly towards his own line with Erling Haaland bearing down on him.
The England international hacks clear just in time.
27 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
There have been some debatable early officiating calls here, but this isn’t one of them: Kai Havertz is rightly booked for tripping John Stones as the defender tries to glide forward with the ball.
A blot for the new forward, but it won’t spoil the promise he showed when he turned and shot in that attack for Arsenal.
25 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Best chance so far by a distance! Ben White arrows towards the City penalty area from the right, having the better of Manuel Akanji courtesy of a deft touch.
The adventurous defender finds Kai Havertz in front of goal with a low pass, and the striker swivels smoothly to fire in a low shot on the turn which Stefan Ortega saves with a leg, readjusting impressively.
The rebound falls nicely for Gabriel Martinelli on the left, who lashes a shot towards the far post. John Stones, bravely, takes it full on the chest – not handball, and away. Fine work on both sides!
23 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
In the least surprising development since these teams emerged in blue and red shirts, Mikel Arteta is on the move again.
This time he’s not happy after Jurrien Timber cuts inside and is lightly checked by a Bernardo Silva hand on his back. The Arsenal manager tells fourth official John Brooks that it’s the second foul from the perpetrator.
“Not every foul is a yellow card,” says Lee Dixon on ITV Sport. “It’s OK to just give a foul.”
20 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
City go haring after Arsenal when they have possession on the edge of their own penalty area, but their opponents do excellently to evade the press and create an attack of their own at pace.
Gabriel Martinelli tries to find Jurrien Timber, who’s on his way towards the City box on the left. Kai Havertz also does well to hold the ball up as part of the attack, which fizzles out.
17 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Arsenal try to string passes together but can’t escape their own half because Rodri pulls down Kai Havertz, for which Mikel Arteta plays charades with an imaginary yellow card.
Stuart Attwell jogs over to caution Arteta. It’s going to be another season of ire for critics of the expressive Spaniards touchline antics.
14 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Thomas Partey’s not had a great start for Arsenal. He gifts City possession on the edge of the penalty area, allowing Champions League final matchwinner Rodri to rifle in a low shot that flashes wide via a Declan Rice touch.
Jack Grealish fails to make the corner from the left count.

10 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
City have had 85% of possession but we’re yet to see an attempt on goal or a corner.
Bernardo Silva has a run at Jurrien Timber level with the edge of the penalty area on the right. The playmaker feeds Kyle Walker just behind him, whose low cross is easy for Arsenal to clear.
8 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Thomas Partey is booked for very gently poking the ball away with the tip of his boot. Officials are cracking down on that this season.
Worthwhile to cut out petty infringements or harshly over-zealous? Can’t wait for the inevitable histrionics when a player gets sent off for it.
6 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Bukayo Saka gives the ball away to allow Akanji to race down the left and send in a dangerous cross, but it’s a little too high for Julian Alvarez, with Ben White trying to head away.
That’s the best opening for either side so far. Gabriel lumps the ball out of his own penalty area, and Jurrien Timber appeals for the game to be stopped because his boot has come off, eventually having his wish granted.
4 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Manuel Akanji almost comes to a standstill with the ball at his feet just shy of the centre circle inside City’s half. Arsenal’s players don’t advance towards him. Then Ortega advances almost to the midway point of his half to play a pass out.
COME ON, CITY! 🩵
— Manchester City (@ManCity) August 6, 2023
2 mins: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
“You take it seriously,” says former Arsenal full-back Lee Dixon on ITV Sport, speaking about this fixture. Dixon reckons players enjoy the upping of intensity during the final week of pre-season.
1 min: Arsenal 0-0 Man City
Arsenal start the action, and City are soon playing passes around at the back as usual. Gabriel concedes a foul as he tries to win the ball off Julian Alvarez by a byline.
5 mins to KO: The shield has been ceremonially carried to the turf and the players are in the tunnel. Kyle Walker volunteers a handshake to Aaron Ramsdale and Ben White, which they accept.
Pep Guardiola approaches Mikel Arteta and gives him a grinning hug and little slap on the chin. Now the teams emerge and the obligatory fireworks go off.
A large Gunners crest is being waves, as is a ‘treble winners’ flag for City. The sun is shining and it looks like a singer is about to belt out the national anthem.
25 mins to KO: The FA Cup holder has won the Community Shield in all but one of the last nine games.

45 mins to KO: Team news! Defender Jurrien Timber, midfielder Declan Rice and striker Kai Havertz form new signings across the spine of Arsenal’s starting side.
We know that Gabriel Jesus will miss the start of the season with a knee injury, so Havertz is alongside Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli in attack.
There are no major surprises for City. Mateo Kovacic – signed from Chelsea in July – starts in midfield, with no sign of new defender Josko Gvardiol and a place on the bench for the returning Kevin De Bruyne. Nathan Ake is still injured.
Arsenal (4-3-3): Ramsdale (GK) – Timber, White, Saliba, Gabriel – Partey, Rice, Odegaard – Saka, Martinelli, Havertz
Man City (4-2-3-1): Ortega (GK) – Walker, Dias, Stones, Akanji – Kovacic, Rodrigo – Silva, Grealish, Alvarez – Haaland
1 hr to KO: These games don’t tend to provide a great deal of insight into how the season might go, with City’s 2018 team the only winners of both the Community Shield and the Premier League.
That said, Arsenal might fancy their chances of a rare win against the team they almost took all the way in the title race last season: the Gunners have lost just two of their last 15 games at Wembley Stadium in all competitions, winning nine times along the way.

1 hour 40 mins to kickoff: City have lost their last two Community Shield matches: 1-0 against Leicester in 2021 and 3-1 against Liverpool last year.
The only team to lose the match in three consecutive years are Manchester United, who lost four in a row between 1998 and 2001.
2 hours to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of the 2023 Community Shield.
Arsenal’s last five goals at Wembley Stadium have been by former captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who left the club in February 2022 after falling out with Mikel Arteta.
No current Gunners squad member has scored for them at the national stadium but they’re on a strong run in this one-off game, winning on the last four occasions when they’ve been involved since losing 2-1 to Chelsea in 2005.
City could scarcely wish for better opponents, on form. The Premier League holders have defeated Arsenal in 15 of their last 16 games against them in all competitions, winning each of the last eight fixtures between the teams.
With the start of their season only five days away, though, manager Pep Guardiola could field a team at less than full strength and forgive his players for not treating this game with quite the same gravity as their last competitive fixture – the UEFA Champions League final on 10 June.
We’ll have news on the starting sides Arteta and Guardiola select coming up, followed by live updates throughout the match!
Arsenal vs Manchester City lineups
Arsenal were without Gabriel Jesus and Mohamed Elneny through knee injuries but Bukayo Saka returned after illness.
Former City wideman Oleksandr Zinchenko (calf), Reiss Nelson (toe) and Albert Sambi Lokonga (muscle) missed out, as did Folarin Balogun.
Defender Jurrien Timber, midfielder Declan Rice and striker Kai Havertz formed new signings across the spine of the starting side.
Arsenal starting lineup (4-3-3): Ramsdale (GK) – Timber, White, Saliba, Gabriel – Partey, Rice, Odegaard – Saka, Martinelli, Havertz
More: Best bets and prediction for Arsenal vs City
Kevin De Bruyne was only fit for the bench following a hamstring injury but midfielder Mateo Kovacic started after signing from Chelsea in June and making his non-competitive debut during pre-season.
Josko Gvardiol signed for City on Saturday but was not involved. Fellow defender Nathan Ake was absent after limping off against Bayern Munich and being an unused substitute against Atletico Madrid.
Man City starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Ortega (GK) – Walker, Dias, Stones, Akanji – Kovacic, Rodrigo – Silva, Grealish, Alvarez – Haaland
