‘Because of me we didn’t win’

Erik ten Hag’s side came into the opening round of Champions League fixtures under pressure after back-to-back 3-1 defeats in the Premier League but made a strong start at the Allianz Arena, going close when Christian Eriksen was denied by the brilliance of Sven Ulreich.

And while Ulreich was instrumental in keeping his side level, his opposite number endured a moment to forget when he let Leroy Sane’s tame effort slip through his fingers and nestle into the bottom corner.

‘It’s a terrible mistake by Onana!’ – Man Utd keeper flaps at Sane effort as Bayern take lead

It was the latest error of Onana’s short United career having joined from Inter Milan in the summer and the Cameroonian took full responsibility in the aftermath of another disappointing night for the Manchester club.

“It’s difficult to lose this way because in the beginning we started very good,” Onana told TNT Sports. “After my mistake we lost control of the game. It’s a difficult situation for us, for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down.

“Because of me we didn’t win but we just have to move on. This is the life of the goalkeeper.”

He added: “We were very good on the ball, they didn’t create any chances. The first shot on target I made a mistake so I think it was the key point of the game.

“The team went down because of that mistake. I have to learn from it and be strong, move on. It’s not an easy situation but I’m very happy with the comeback of the team, we were fighting until the end.

“I have a lot to prove because my start in Manchester hasn’t been so good, not how I want. This was one of my worst games and it’s difficult because we have big ambition. We are a big club and want to win everything.

“It’s a tough time and we have to be together and continue working hard.”

Ten Hag: If you score three goals you have to take a point

Ten Hag admitted the club are in a difficult period as they conceded three or more goals for the third straight game for the first time since 1978.

The Dutchman was particularly critical of the response to Bayern’s opening goal. Four minutes after Sane’s opener, Serge Gnabry doubled the German side’s advantage, finding himself in acres of space in the United area to finish with ease.

“Mistakes are being made but you have to bounce back as a team,” Ten Hag said. “If one player makes a mistake, it’s done, its gone. We have to believe as a team that we can always bounce back.”

After the break, United did make a game of it with a goal from Rasmus Hojlund and a Casemiro brace, but the result never truly looked in doubt.

“Disappointed because we should stay in the game. If you score three goals at Bayern Munich you have to take a point,” Ten Hag added.

“We are in a period, a lot is going against us. We have to make our own luck. We’ve played great teams in the last three games.

“Every game is important. Every game is huge. We have to make our own luck. Nobody can help you.

“We, team, me included, only we can do it. It’s in our hands, nobody else.”
