Brock Purdy is back in the NFC Championship for the second time in as many seasons after the 49ers squeaked out a comeback win over the Packers in the Divisional Round.
Purdy’s story from Mr. Irrelevant to San Francisco’s full-time starting QB has been well documented to this point.
As a rookie in 2022, Purdy went 6-0 to close to the regular season after taking over the role with both Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo injured. Purdy led the 49ers to wins over the Seahawks and Cowboys in the playoffs before an elbow injury limited him to just four passing attempts in a loss to the Eagles in the NFC title game.
Back as the starter in 2023, Purdy found himself in MVP conversations for the majority of the year. The 24-year-old led San Francisco to another NFC West title and the No. 1 seed in the conference, ranking third in the NFL with 31 passing touchdowns and fifth with 4,280 passing yards.

And, believe it or not, despite all of his immediate success, Purdy isn’t even one of the 50 highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL. Here’s why.
Brock Purdy contract details
As a second-year player, Purdy is still on his rookie contract. Since the value of rookie contracts are dependent on your draft position, the 49ers star had a fixed rate after being selected with the very last pick (262nd overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft.
As a result, Purdy signed a four-year, $3.74 million deal with San Francisco after the draft.
Purdy wasn’t expected to be the 49ers’ next franchise quarterback, so there wasn’t any big or flashy signing bonus when he was taken as Mr. Irrelevant. The organization is getting its most important position at a massive discount, given that Purdy was the 64th highest-paid QB in the league this season based on average annual value.
Being selected with the very last pick in the draft will actually cost Purdy some cash compared to if he had gone undrafted. Drafted players have almost no room for negotiations on their four-year contracts, while undrafted players can re-negotiate their deals after their second regular season.
Because of Purdy’s draft status, the 49ers will not have to worry about working out a big contract extension for Purdy until the 2025 offseason.

Purdy will continue to make some extra cash based on incentives, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones. He made an additional $162,000 for reaching the NFC Championship game last year and another $174,000, approximately, for returning to that stage this year.
If Purdy can get the 49ers over the hump and reach the Super Bowl, he’d receive at least $89,000 with upwards of $164,000 if they win the whole thing.
And while those incentive bonuses are nice, Purdy’s contract value is still nothing compared to his level of production.
