Bukayo Saka was hilariously forced to deny that his mum put him to bed before he made his European debut for Arsenal.

The winger is one of the best players in Europe these days but back in 2018 he was just a fresh-faced teen who may or may not have needed his mother to help him at bedtime.

In November 2018, Saka made his European debut as a 68th-minute substitute in the Europa League clash with Ukrainian side Vorskla Poltava, a match that saw him interviewed by broadcaster Reshmin Chowdhury for BT Sport after the match.

And five years on, Saka was interviewed by Chowdhury again following their 6-0 Champions League demolition of Lens with the broadcaster reminding him of a rather embarrassing exchange.

Speaking on TNT Sports, Chowdhury said: “Bukayo, when you did make that debut in Europe I interviewed you after the game – you remember it, don’t you? Because your answer was, ‘I was so excited, I found out last night and my mum had to put me to bed’.

“I didn’t say that,” Saka laughed. “I knew you were going to bring that up, I knew it!”

Asked about the stick he got from his teammates after that interview, Saka said: “To be fair my friends did and a lot of my family did as well.

“I don’t know why I even said that, if I’m being honest, because that didn’t happen.

“She sort of told me to go to bed, but she didn’t PUT me to bed – there’s a difference! But it’s a funny moment, to be fair.”

Saka found the back of the net in the 6-0 victory over Lens to help Arsenal into the last-16 of the Champions League.

In five Champions League appearances in his career, the 22-year-old has now scored three goals and provided four assists for his teammates.

With a minimum of three more games in this season’s competition now confirmed, he’ll no doubt be hoping for more of the same.
