Cardinals have ‘strong interest’ in veteran White Sox hurler, per insider

The St. Louis Cardinals are looking to add a starter before the deadline, and they are reportedly interested in a veteran right-hander pitching in Chicago.

St. Louis entered Sunday at 47-51, which had them just a half game back for the lead in the National League Wild Card race. A division title isn’t beyond the Cardinals’ grasp, either, as they were just five games back of the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the NL Central entering Sunday.

St. Louis has all the making of a playoff team, and general manager Mike Girsch knows that by fortifying the Cardinals rotation with another proven starter, serious contention is possible.

Girsch has his eye on Tampa Bay Rays’ Zach Eflin and Texas Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi, but he’s also strongly considering the acquisition of a right-hander for the Chicago White Sox.

USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported on Sunday that St. Louis is looking closely at Erick Fedde.

“The St. Louis Cardinals have strong interest in White Sox veteran starter Erick Fedde,” Nightengale said.

Fedde’s 7-3 record this season is miraculous given the state of the White Sox. He’s also accrued an impressive 2.99 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 111 1/3 innings pitched.

The 31-year-old hurler would be a meaningful addition for the Cardinals as they look to navigate through a crowded NL playoff situation.

Will Girsch be able to pull off a deal?
