In April 2022, Tauranga, New Zealand-born Cherneka Johnson secured her place in history. She became the second Māori and third woman from New Zealand to claim a world boxing title. The triumph came in a hard-fought split decision victory over Mexican boxer Melissa Esquivel for the IBF World Super Bantamweight title. During the announcement of her victory, American New Zealander Lt Dan Hennessey took the mic, underscoring the significance of the moment. The proud Māori athlete stood tall. She proudly displayed the Tino Rangatiratanga flag in the background.

Ahead of her pro debut in 2016, Johnson told WBAN, “My full name is Cherneka Lee Johnson, but most people know me as Neekz. I am 20 years old and started boxing when I first moved to Australia in 2011. I am originally from New Zealand, Tauranga.” Johnson has been vocal about her roots in Māori heritage.

All about the boxing star’s family

Ahead of her title defense against Australian veteran Susie Ramadan in 2022, Cherneka Johnson faced a deeply personal situation. In a somber turn of events, Johnson’s brother fell victim to a senseless act of violence. He succumbed to the fatal injuries in a tragic altercation. Despite her grief, Johnson’s commitment to her sport and her family shone through. “It was hard. It was a hard time during that week with my family,” Johnson shared with the Sydney Morning Herald.

The eldest of three siblings, Johnson, is deeply rooted in her family. It comprises her sister, and herself. Despite her burgeoning career and athletic pursuits, Johnson remains firmly connected to her familial bonds.

Johnson expressed a profound sense of duty to honor her brother’s memory. “I always knew this is what my brother would have wanted. He wanted to be here on Sunday for this fight,” Johnson revealed. “This would have been the first fight he would have been able to come to, so this one is a dedication to him,” she admitted emotionally.

As Johnson steps into the ring amidst unimaginable adversity, her courage and resilience serve as a poignant reminder of the power of familial love and legacy. Do you think Cherneka Johnson will claim victory tonight? Let us know in the comments section below.
