Joe Gibbs is a sporting legend, and his legacy stretches far beyond the boundaries of NASCAR circuits. The owner of the 5-time Cup Series-winning team also served as the head coach of the NFL team, Washington Redskins [now Washington Commanders] leading them to three Super Bowl titles. It can be a challenging task to carry on the legacy of the NASCAR Hall of Famer like Joe Gibbs, but his grandson, Ty Gibbs, has found a way to keep himself in his grandpa’s good books.

The JGR’s #54 driver understands the family legacy. And when it comes to allegiances in the sport of football, his pick was Washington Commanders. The 21-year-old had the option to root for another team, but Joe Gibbs’ influence sure worked its magic in creating another fanboy for the renowned football team.

The young driver is slated to be among the finest stars that will take NASCAR circuits by storm in the coming years. While racing remains his top priority, Gibbs is also a fan of football. It can be tricky for someone like Gibbs to choose his favorite football owing to his Carolina roots. However, the 2022 Xfinity Series made his thoughts clear about his love for the Commanders over the Panthers.
Talking to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass, Gibbs explained his reasons for supporting the Commander. He said, “I couldn’t care less about any Carolina sports. I like the Hornets a little bit. But I’m Washington all the way.” The team winning multiple Super Bowls under the guidance of his grandfather, Joe Gibbs, made the choice an easy one for Ty Gibbs.

On the subject of football, Gibbs also talked about his unique collection, which seems to have an interesting piece of history. The 21-year-old said, “I have some football art; actually, I have a couple of cool pieces. I think I have a game ball as well – I probably stole it from my Coach’s house. But I have some cool stuff in there. I guess not much sports art besides my racing art.”

Ty Gibbs throws shade at other Cup drivers while talking about what he is missing out
Despite making his name in the NASCAR circuits as an upcoming race car driver, Ty Gibbs would have liked to inherit his family’s important football genes. Why, you may ask? The 21-year-old stands 5-foot-7 tall, which is shy of that 6-foot mark. However, the JGR driver made it clear that he isn’t the smallest among the Cup Series drivers.
“I’ll tell you why. Because my brother and my cousins are super big kids. Both my younger brothers are bigger than me now, so I guess that means I’m really small, which doesn’t help. But I’m not the smallest in the Cup Series. I don’t think people know that. There’s other smaller guys than me. I always get picked on for being small but there’s some small dudes out there,” Gibbs added.

While he didn’t take any names, Gibbs may very well be talking about Justin Haley and Tyler Reddick, who are 5’2″ and 5’5”, respectively. Luckily for all three of them, height is not the metric that gives an edge to the drivers in Cup Series races.
