College football signing day tracker 2024: Live updates, top recruits & classes for early signing period

College football’s early signing period got underway National Signing Day on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Things have looked a bit different around this time period with the era of the transfer portal, which has taken center stage with the college football season now over for the vast majority of the teams across the nation.

With this, there are several players who make their decisions ahead of the December signing period. But it was still be a time of longstanding recruiting targets showing just how much sincerity was in their original commitments.

In terms of teams expected to be in the lead during the early signing period, 2023 was some of the same and some different.

Questions surrounding Jordan Seaton

Seaton was highly coveted as Deion Sanders’ prized offensive line recruit. Except the certainty surrounding that seems to have faded a bit on National Signing Day. There’s been a lot of drama surrounding Seaton as Maryland has made a strong push to flip Seaton.

The 5-star prospect is now largely expected to join the Terrapins. This would mark a huge loss for Coach Prime after he committed on Dec. 7.

He is the No. 1 offensive tackle, the No. 4 prospect in the state of Florida and the No. 11 overall player in the nation for the cycle according to the 247Sports Composite.

According to multiple reports, Seaton turned down a “multi-million” dollar offer from the Volunteers to play for Colorado.

Georgia was expected to lead the race

The Bulldogs were strongly expected to finish at the top of the rankings for the early signing period in 2023. In 2022, Georgia finished second overall in the nation, behind only Alabama. The Crimson Tide aren’t nearly in the same place in the mix this year, but the Bulldogs stand to move forward as they’ve maintained continuity of success despite just barely missing the College Football Playoff.

That said, Kirby Smart and Co. suffered a setback when top quarterback prospect Dylan Raiola flipped from Georgia to Nebraska less than 48 hours before the signing period opened.

Ellis Robinson IV, the No. 1 cornerback in the nation and the No. 3 overall player in the country, was also a potential flip the Bulldogs wanted to keep a firm hold of — and they did just that as he put pen to paper during NSD.

Florida State and Alabama make a push, Ohio State lands prized WR recruit Jeremiah Smith as expected

Alabama has not displayed quite the same level of dominance over the past couple of seasons as it did when it was considered college football’s dynasty team, but the Crimson Tide were still expected to finish more than just respectably in the rankings.

Nick Saban’s team made it into the CFP in a last-minute effort after previously being expected to miss this place in the postseason once more and is now ranked fourth. That’s roughly where they were projected to finish among recruiting classes as well.

While Georgia was projected to be top dog, FSU and Ohio State still have the chance to overtake the top spot. Flips and names to watch for the Seminoles will included five-star defensive lineman LJ McCray and three-star defensive lineman D’Nas White. McCray ultimately committed to Georgia.

In the same category for the Buckeyes was wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, listed as the No. 1 overall player in the class, wide receiver Mylan Graham and edge rusher Eddrick Houston — both of whom were five-star recruits.

Fortunately for the Buckeyes, the biggest news of the day was landing Smith, who said the decision came down to Miami and Ohio State for him, but that he ultimately elected to go with the Buckeyes because he said he wanted to go to a place with a strong track record of first-round picks.
