Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott says he doesn’t mind the pressure of playing the 2024 season with unrestricted free agency looming next spring.
“This is the urgency you should always have, to be honest,” Prescott said Wednesday, per The Athletic’s Jon Machota. “Maybe guys who wouldn’t normally feel it, feel it. I don’t mind it. I’ve been in this position before. I’m a gambling man. I’ll gamble on myself and my guys.”
Prescott is heading into the final year of the four-year, $160 million deal he signed with the Cowboys in 2021. The team is not yet close to finalizing an extension, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Wednesday night on SportsCenter.
“The two sides have not come close this offseason,” Schefter said. “It doesn’t look like they’re going to come close any time soon.”
Last time the Cowboys and Prescott ended up in a contract dispute, the team franchise tagged him for the 2020 season.
These negotiations will have a different outcome thanks to the no-trade and no-tag clauses including in Prescott’s 2021 deal.
Without a new contract, Prescott would cost the Cowboys at least $40 million against the cap in 2025 thanks to void years contained in the current deal. That likely adds pressure to Dallas and offers leverage for Prescott in the ongoing negotiations.
“I don’t really take things personal,” Prescott said in May about contract negotiations, per ESPN’s Todd Archer. “Maybe in my first deal, maybe things were a little different than they are now. One, it’s my age and who I am, where I am in my life, and I guess the fact that that first deal got done. The understanding that I have a lot of decision in this, too. I have a lot of say-so, too.”
Despite the uncertain status of his future with the Cowboys, Prescott has so far participated in offseason activities with the team.
Prescott led the NFL with 410 completions and 36 touchdowns last regular season, but for the fifth time missed out on the second round following a Wild Card loss to the Green Bay Packers. If contract negotiations continue into the 2024 season, finally leading the Cowboys on a deeper playoff run would further increase Prescott’s leverage in negotiations.
