The New York Giants have been among the teams scouting the top quarterback prospects in the 2024 draft class, but the incumbent Daniel Jones isn’t sweating it.
Jones told reporters on Monday that he understands why the Giants are exploring the option of adding a young quarterback, and he compared his situation with the one former Giants running back Saquon Barkley faced over his uncertain future with the franchise.
“(It’s) the same thing with Saquon’s (situation last year). The nature of our business,” Jones said after reporting for the start of New York’s voluntary offseason program. “It’s a competitive league, so the best way to handle that is to focus on what I’m doing. Focus on myself, and making sure that I’m healthy and ready to play good football. That’s what I can control.”
The Giants own the No. 6 pick in the first round of this month’s NFL draft. There has been speculation that quarterbacks could be selected with each of the first four picks, and as many as six could be selected in the first round alone.
Jones is still rehabbing from a torn ACL that limited him to six games in 2023, but he said he’s been making progress and the “plan is to be ready to go by training camp.” Even when healthy during his five-year career, he has struggled to prove himself as a franchise quarterback.
However, when asked if he believes he’s the best option for the Giants, Jones definitively responded, “I do, yes.”
