It turns out Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider isn’t fully informed about what the New York Giants are planning to do at quarterback next season.
Speaking to reporters at his introductory press conference on Friday, Lock said Giants’ brass “conveyed” to him that Daniel Jones is going to be their starter in 2024.

After Lock signed a one-year deal with the Giants in free agency, Schneider said Thursday on his radio show on Seattle Sports 710AM (h/t NFL.com’s Kevin Patra) that New York “basically sold him on the opportunity to compete to be the starter.”
Lock spent the past two seasons with the Seahawks after being acquired from the Denver Broncos as part of the Russell Wilson trade. He made two starts in 2023 when Geno Smith was injured.
The Giants did need quarterback depth with Jones recovering from a torn ACL. Tyrod Taylor joined the New York Jets as their backup in free agency.
There has been some question about Jones’ status with the Giants going into 2024. His contract would make it very difficult to move on this offseason. They would take a $47.1 million dead cap charge if he’s released as post-June 1 cut.
Even if Jones stays on the roster, there has been a lot of buzz about New York potentially targeting a quarterback in the draft.
Per SNY’s Connor Hughes, Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy is seen as “the player the Giants want” in the first round. They currently own the sixth overall pick.
It’s reasonable to assume even if the Giants land McCarthy, they could start the regular season with Jones as their starter. This scenario would put Lock in an awkward position of potentially being the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart at some point during the season.
Lock’s deal with the Giants is for one year with $5 million guaranteed. The 27-year-old has started 28 games in his career since entering the NFL in 2019.
