Duane Holmes “looking forward” to growing Preston role

Duane Holmes didn’t have to wait long to make an early impact with Preston North End and now after a positive club debut under his belt, the veteran midfielder/winger is ready for more.

Holmes came off the bench on Saturday to register an equalizing assist in Preston’s 1-1 road draw with Bristol City. The summer acquisition came onto the field in the 72nd minute before setting up Will Keane for Preston’s tying goal just 14 minutes later.

After missing the final month-and-a-half of the English Football League Championship schedule last season, Holmes is eager to earn a growing role during the early months of the new campaign.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Holmes said ahead of Preston’s EFL Cup tie vs. Salford City on Tuesday. “It was nice to get some minutes in the legs [on Saturday].

“Coming back from injury is never nice so hopefully I get more minutes on Tuesday and start working towards full fitness again.”

Holmes, 28, was acquired by Preston this summer on a permanent deal from Huddersfield Town. After totaling over 300 appearances for Huddersfield, Derby County, and others, Holmes now has a great chance to earn Premier League promotion this season after Preston’s positive 12th place finish just a few months ago.

The EFL Cup schedule kicks off for Ryan Lowe’s men on Tuesday with a potential upset on the cards at Deepdale. League Two visitors Salford City heads into the first round showdown off the back of an important 2-0 road victory on Saturday, kicking off its new campaign on a positive note.

Holmes isn’t overlooking The Ammies ability to pull an upset, but know the potential opportunity of facing EPL opposition in the second round following a victory on Tuesday.

“We’ve got to beat Salford tomorrow and then we’ve got a chance of getting one of the big teams,” Holmes added. “I remember we went to Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in the same season when I was at Derby and it’s nice to put yourself against the best players, and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

It will be the first head-to-head showdown between the two clubs since August 2020.
