England begun get their quest for more silverware with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Haiti in their Women’s World Cup opener.

Sarina Wiegman’s European champions are among the heavy favourites for glory this summer in Australia and New Zealand.

But England struggled to impose themselves on a stubborn Haitian side in their first game in Group D as they scraped all three points.

Georgia Stanway scored the winner from the penalty spot having missed her initial effort before VAR ordered a retake for encroachment.

And then the Lionesses found themselves indebted to goalkeeper Mary Earps to preserve the clean sheet with a stunning late save.
