England star Walsh trains alone to spark hopes of comeback

Riise hopeful of Hegerberg fitness for Norway clash with Japan

England midfielder Keira Walsh is back in training following a knee injury, sparking hopes that she can still play a part at the Women’s World Cup.

There was further cause for optimism on Friday when Walsh returned to individual training.

“22 players are out for training today at Central Coast Stadium,” the Lionesses said on social media.

“Keira Walsh is also at the venue, following an individual training programme as she continues her rehabilitation.”

England topped their group with a perfect record, beating Haiti, Denmark and China to reach the last 16.

The European champions’ next task is a knockout clash with Nigeria.

The Africans have been one of the tournament sensations, finishing above Olympic champions Canada and beating co-hosts Australia as they went unbeaten in the group stage.

The match takes place on Monday, August 7 in Brisbane and kicks off at 08:30 UK time.

Should England go far, they would have a quarter-final on August 12 and semi-final on August 16.

The Women’s World Cup final is on August 20 in Sydney.

Walsh played a key role in England’s Euro 2022 victory last summer, starting every match for Sarina Wiegman’s side as they triumphed on home soil.

She was named Player of the Match in the 2-1 win over Germany in the final and later named in the Team of the Tournament.

The 26-year-old won the UEFA Women’s Champions League and Spanish title with Barcelona last season and clinched a Women’s Super League crown, three Women’s FA Cups and four Women’s League Cups during an eight-year spell at Manchester City.
