England needed only five points from their three Group C matches to finish top of the group and secure themselves what would, on paper, be the kindest possible Round of 16 clash for a relatively safe route into the quarter finals.
Gareth Southgate’s men kicked off the tournament with a 1-0 win over Serbia before back-to-back draws against Denmark and Slovenia was enough to top the group.
The Three Lions are looking to be crowned champions of Europe for the very first time this summer, and will be aiming to go one step further than the last tournament, in which they lost the final on penalties.
Tuesday night’s draw with Slovenia means that England have now only won two of their last eight matches ahead of their Round of 16 tie, but will be buoyed by having been placed on what is very much the easier side of the draw, which presents them with a favourable route to a potential final.
Slovakia upset the odds by securing qualification to the knockout stage in what is just their fourth appearance in a major competition, finishing as one of the best third placed teams in the group stage by picking up four points from their Group E matches.
For the first time in Euros history, all four teams in Group E finished on four points, but Slovakia’s goal difference meant they finished in third place in the group.
Francesco Calvona’s side have already delivered one of the shocks of the tournament by winning their opening clash of the tournament against a much-fancied Beglium side, but a 2-1 defeat by Ukraine in their second match meant they still needed a point from their final match to secure qualification.
A 1-1 draw played with Romania saw both teams qualify for the Round of 16, and means that the Falcons have lost just one of their last six matches now ahead of their trip to Gelsenkirchen on Sunday to take on England.
The winner of Sudnay evening’s tie will play either Switzerland or defending champions Italy in the quarter-final next Saturday.
England have won five of their six previous matches against Slovakia, the only draw between the two coming in Euro 2016 when the two drew 0-0 on the final day of the group stage.
The last time the two sides met was in a 2018 World Cup qualifier at Wembley, in which Eric Dier and Marcus Rashford scored to England come from behind to earn a 2-1 win in September 2
