England vs Switzerland predictions

England live to fight another day. The Three Lions rode their luck against Slovakia last time out, conceding a first-half goal and failing to find an equaliser until deep into second-half stoppage time.

The leveller, when it came, was sensational. Marc Guehi won a flick-on in the box and Jude Bellingham’s acrobatic bicycle kick sent the ball home and the England fans delirious.

The momentum was with England at that point and Harry Kane went on to strike in extra time to give Gareth Southgate’s side a 2-1 win.

Make no mistake: England were lucky. They came within seconds of losing in the last 16 of the European Championship to a team that, for all their endeavour, are not exactly in the ‘world beater’ category.

This was not a one-off either. England have been poor throughout the tournament. Their team contains some wonderful individuals, but the collective is considerably less than the sum of its parts right now.

Familiar issues were on display in the last 16. England struggled to progress the ball from deep. Too many passes went sideways or backwards. There was no discernible attacking strategy beyond hooking hopeful crosses into the penalty area.

Reading too much into body language is never recommended, but it was jarring to see England’s players continually throw their hands up in the air when things were not going well.

They were eventually saved by Bellingham’s moment of magic, but that came at the end of a game in which the Real Madrid man contributed little. Worryingly for Southgate, Bellingham was far from alone in that.

It is true that Southgate’s team are on the easier side of the bracket, but the likes of Turkey, the Netherlands and Switzerland will be saying much the same thing.

Looking any further ahead than Saturday’s showdown with the Swiss would be a mistake. This is England’s toughest test yet. And considering they nearly failed against Slovakia, nothing should be taken for granted.

England vs Switzerland betting tips

England have been far from their best so far this summer and this match will be their toughest test yet.

Switzerland to qualify – 11/8 (Sky Bet)

In many ways, Switzerland are the opposite of England.

The main worry about Murat Yakin’s side now that we have reached the latter stages of Euro 2024 is whether they have enough difference-makers in attacking areas. The same cannot be said for Southgate’s outfit.

On the plus side, Switzerland are very well coached. They move from a 3-4-2-1 formation out of possession to a 4-2-3-1 with the ball. Yakin, under pressure going into the Euros, has redeemed himself.

Granit Xhaka ran the game when the Swiss beat Italy 2-0 in the round of 16. If England are not careful, he will do the same here.

In addition, Switzerland attack well down the left and they could exploit Kyle Walker, who made several positional errors against Slovakia.

They might not get the job done within 90 minutes, but Switzerland have demonstrated this summer that they are more than capable of eliminating England.

⚽ Tip Switzerland to qualify at 11/8 with Sky Bet ⚽

Both teams to score – 11/10 (bet365)

England are averaging a goal every 97.5 minutes at Euro 2024. That does not bode well ahead of this clash with Switzerland.

Southgate will surely shake up his team on Saturday. It was bizarre to see him so reluctant to make substitutions in regulation time against Slovakia when plan A was clearly not working.

Cole Palmer and Anthony Gordon could be used from the start here. At the very least, Southgate must be prepared  to shift things around if the first half does not go to plan.

England’s defence has held up reasonably well so far, with just two goals conceded across four matches (although Guehi is banned for this game). There were shakier moments against Slovakia, though, and they have not yet faced a side of Switzerland’s calibre.

Goals at both ends looks like an astute choice for this one.

Jude Bellingham to score or assist – 2/1 (VBET)

After his magnificent equaliser last time out, Bellingham could be seen mouthing the words: “who else?”

It was a moment which exemplified the attacking midfielder’s confidence. Bellingham has not exactly hid his on-field frustration over the last few weeks, but he was England’s best player against Serbia on matchday one and then saved his side’s skin in the round of 16.

Even though he has not been dominating matches from minute one to 90, Bellingham has the ability and mentality to decide a game with a crucial intervention in the final third.

Nothing seems to faze the Stourbridge-born 21-year-old, who instantly lit up La Liga in his debut campaign at Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world.

One way or another, Bellingham is bound to be a key figure in Saturday’s encounter at the Merkur Spiel-Arena.
