England were 1-0 down when Alex Greenwood went off with a head injury in Belgium
England defender Alex Greenwood received lengthy treatment and was taken off on a stretcher following a clash of heads during their Women’s Nations League defeat by Belgium.
Greenwood, 30, clashed with Belgium forward Jassina Blom and was treated for almost 12 minutes in Leuven.
The Manchester City centre-back was eventually replaced in the 32nd minute by Chelsea’s Jess Carter.
“It was not nice to see her in pain,” Lucy Bronze said after the 3-2 loss.
England defender Bronze told ITV4: “Obviously when it’s a head injury, it’s something you can’t take lightly. The medical team were superb on the pitch, making sure she was safe, so I just wish her a good recovery.”
There was concern from team-mates who stood around Greenwood offering support as she received treatment from the medical staff and took on oxygen.
Supporters applauded as Greenwood was then carried off on a stretcher.
Blom also received treatment on the pitch and her head was bandaged up before she was allowed to continue playing.
Greenwood was seen walking around after the match, but Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman said shortly after the game that she hadn’t had a chance to talk to the medical staff yet.
