Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has promised he will ‘never make fun out of them again’ if Tottenham beat Manchester City.

City need a win to go above Arsenal, who are ahead by one point but have a superior goal difference, but Tottenham fans are distinctly aware that they could hand their biggest rivals the title by beating the champions.

Nevertheless, Gunners supporters are desperate for Spurs to help them out – including former Arsenal star Ozil.

The ex-Germany international is still a keen fan of his old club and often keeps tabs on them – especially in the current title race.

Speaking on social media, Ozil said: “First time ever tonight: COME ON YOU SPURSSS!

“If Tottenham don’t lose this game I will never make fun of them again… I promise #MCITOT.”

Ozil played for the Gunners for eight years from 2013 to 2021, making 254 appearances and scoring 44 goals and has since undergone a major body transformation.

In fact, it was current manager Mikel Arteta who dropped him from the side, leaving him out of the squad list as his final season saw him not play a single time before his contract expired in the summer of 2021.

Even still, the playmaker, who last played for Istanbul Basaksehir last year, still has a close affinity with Arsenal fans, as shown by his latest promise on social media.

Tottenham could end up handing the title to Arsenal

Though for many Tottenham fans, this is an empty promise, who might rather see Arsenal miss out on the title than avoid a ribbing from Ozil.

But Spurs have their own ambitions this season and Champions League football is not out of the picture.

With two games left, they are five points behind Aston Villa, but two wins would see them go a point ahead of Unai Emery’s men.

Villa face Crystal Palace on the final day of the season, who are themselves in a rich vein of form, meaning Tottenham might have every chance of clinching fourth.

For City, the situation is very simple: Win both of their remaining games and finish as champions.

Doing so would see them become Premier League champions for a fourth time in a row – a feat that has never been managed before.
