Exclusive: Klopp on ‘different intensity and feeling’ of Merseyside derby

Jurgen Klopp has labelled the Merseyside derby “one of a kind” ahead of Liverpool’s encounter with Everton on Saturday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

The Reds will be looking to turn their fortunes around with victory after dropping points in their last two games against Tottenham and Brighton.

Everton make the short trip to Anfield with their tails up after a crucial 3-0 win over Bournemouth before the international break, following a turbulent start to the campaign.

Liverpool return to their home ground for the clash against near neighbours Everton after back-to-back matches on the road, and Klopp expects a fiery atmosphere on Merseyside.

“A lot of intensity is the word going through my mind because that’s always the case,” Klopp told TNT Sports when asked about his thoughts on the fixture.

“Tough games, tight games, but we always know it’s one-of-a-kind. It’s very different to all other games you play.”

On whether it’s the worst game of the season to lose, Klopp added: “It always is. Definitely.”

The German is set to come up against Sean Dyche for the 14th time in his career. Dyche is the eighth Everton manager he’s faced during his Liverpool tenure.

Klopp has won nine encounters against Dyche, drawn two and lost two, and despite only losing one of 17 meetings with Everton since his appointment in 2015, he still doesn’t enjoy facing whoever is in the Everton dugout.

“I would consider Carlo Ancelotti as a friend, but during his Everton time we had no contact,” Klopp said.

“There’s no relationship possible between Liverpool managers and Everton managers!”

Asked if Liverpool v Everton is considered a “friendly derby” because of the close-knit community on Merseyside, Klopp added: “Not on the pitch, it was never.

“Not true in the stands. But, after eight years of living here, I know a lot of Evertonians and most of them are really nice people, to be honest.

“Everyone has their own story about why they support Everton or Liverpool, people tell me they had no choice. But between the two whistles, I don’t think anybody has too many positive thoughts about the other team.”

Despite the unique and “intense” build-up to a Merseyside derby, Klopp made it clear he doesn’t have to give the occasion special treatment.

“I don’t have to give the special team talk. That would mean I don’t take other games seriously and that’s obviously not the case,” he said.

“They all have the same importance but I know it’s a special game and it’s nice in sport, having derbies, I love it.

“There are different intensities, and different feelings and rightly so.”
