Rio Ferdinand slammed Kylian Mbappe for his ‘lazy’ performance as PSG were humiliated by Newcastle United at St James’ Park last night.

The World Cup winner was given a two rating by L’Equipe as the French giants lost 4-1, and Manchester United and England legend Ferdinand was not impressed.

“Slack, lazy, lack of concentration, focus – all of the above,” he said about Mbappe and his PSG teammates.

“It is the opposite when you look at the Newcastle team. Truly focused, concentrating, dynamic, aggressive.”

The criticism continued on talkSPORT, with Sports Bar host Jason Cundy scathing of PSG’s attutude.

“PSG, it’s pathetic from them, absolutely pathetic,” said the former Chelsea defender.

“What an absolute disgrace they are as a football club, they’re appalling.”

Kieran Trippier has shown off a picture of his son wearing Kylian Mbappe’s shirt after Newcastle’s stunning victory over the Ligue 1 champions.

But it may upset teammate Sean Longstaff, who was brutally turned down by the French superstar when he asked for his jersey after the game.

Boyhood Geordie Longstaff enjoyed a dream night at St James’ Park as he scored one of Newcastle’s four goals against PSG in the Champions League.

He looked to cap off the night by securing Mbappe’s shirt, but he’s already promised it to club captain Trippier, who wanted it for his boy.

Wolves have had a pop at Jurgen Klopp for his calls for Liverpool’s defeat to Tottenham to be replayed over the VAR saga.

You’ve opened a can of worms, Jurgen!

How far can Newcastle United go in the Champions League? That was the question on everybody’s lips last night after their famous victory over PSG.

Eddie Howe’s men were just too sharp for the French giants, with the Toon Army creating an atmosphere that would shake even the strongest of opponents.

The win over Kylian Mbappe and co. has shown just what this Magpies side can do.

And talkSPORT hosts Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara are expecting big things from Howe’s team in Europe this season – especially with a St James’ Park fortress on their side.

🏟️ Jamie: “Newcastle are a problem because of St. James’ Park…”

👏 Jason: “Can they win it? No. They can top the group & get quarter-finals.”

Erling Haaland drew another blank in the Champions League during Manchester City’s 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig.

The reigning champions were forced to find two late goals in Germany to continue their 100 per cent start to Group G.

Leipzig’s Lois Openda cancelled out Phil Foden’s opener, before Julian Alvarez and Jeremy Doku struck late on for the visitors.

However, City boss Guardiola may be a little concerned about his goal machine Haaland.

The Norwegian superstar has now failed to score in his last five Champions League matches, the longest of his career so far.

Haaland’s overall record in Europe is stunning, with 35 goals in 32 matches, making this goalless patch a drought by his standards.

Pep Guardiola sent a warning to Arsenal as his Man City side bounced back with a 3-1 win over RB Leipzig.

City had suffered defeats to Newcaslte, in the Carabao Cup, and Wolves in the Premier League before their Champions League win.Next up for them is Arsenal on Sunday.

Asked about the importance of delivering such a strong performance ahead of facing Arsenal, Guardiola told TNT Sports: “Yeah, but I’m not going to judge my team on results.

“Both games [against Newcastle and Wolves] was maybe not the best performance but it was not easy when 10 players defend in the box.

“Ten players defending, five players, four players and a striker and a holding midfielder all in the box, it’s not easy!

“So it happened, we were unlucky with the first goal, we were not sharp enough, it happened. It’s many games so I can understand it.

“But despite that, if you think I’m going to doubt about the players or doubt about what we’re going to do this season because today we could have lost again, then you are wrong. You are not the right person to do these questions.

“I rely on these guys unconditionally, winning or not winning, because I know the training sessions, the mentality that they have and they prove it.

“And now we are going to Arsenal to do our game. Rest and hopefully we can arrive in March, April, May being there [in the title race], close to the competitions.

“And I have a feeling we will not be an easy opponent to beat.”

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will not allow Newcastle to get ahead of themselves despite seeing them dismantle Champions League giants Paris St Germain.

The 4-1 victory over the 2020 runners-up at St James’ Park took the Magpies – playing in the competition for the first time in 20 years – to the top of Group F after two games.

However, head coach Howe was refusing to be carried away by a performance and a result which brought back memories of the club’s 3-2 Champions League win over Barcelona 26 years ago.

Howe, who inherited a Newcastle side seemingly heading for the Sky Bet Championship less than two years ago, said: “Going from the difficult moment we were in to now, it’s a great lesson for us not to get ahead of ourselves.

“We’ve come a long way in a short period of time, but we want to keep going and we take nothing for granted. Amazing night, but we’ve got to continue to work hard from here.

“It goes without saying we hope that gives us that belief that we need to be successful in this competition. Against Milan in our first game, there was an element of us not quite hitting the levels that we expected of ourselves.

“But I think it’s only by doing that you can truly prove to yourself that you can do it consistently, and I think today will go a long way towards proving that.

“But as I said, there are so many difficult games to come in this competition. It’s a small step forward, but there’s still a long, long way to go.

“The next game in this competition will be hugely important, but that goes to the back of our minds now as we focus back on to the Premier League and West Ham.”

That’s it for today on talkSPORT.com’s football news blog.

We’ll be bang across tonight’s Champions League action as Newcastle take on Paris Saint-Germain in what will be a raucous St James’ Park. Catch the latest updates on our live blog.

Saudi Arabia have confirmed that they will be making a bid to host the 2034 World Cup.

The bid will be a solo one, meaning all matches would be played in Saudi if they were to win, after earlier talks to co-host with Egypt and Greece came to an end.

Saudi Arabia are going for the 2034 tournament after realising Spain, Portugal and Morocco’s joint bid for the centenary World Cup in 2030 was too strong, talkSPORT understands.

Following the decision to award Spain, Portugal and Morocco the 2030 World Cup, only countries from the Asian Football Confederation or Oceania can bid to host the 2034 tournament.

One of the officials at the centre of the Liverpool VAR controversy has admitted costly errors are the “worst thing” for a referee.

Darren England, the VAR official who wrongly ruled out Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham, has has been stood down from future games while PGMOL chiefs undertake a full review of the “significant human error”.

England was recently interviewed for a new book, ‘The Football School Encyclopedia’, which coincidentally is being published on Thursday.

Asked by authors Alex Bellow and Ben Lyttleton – prior to the Diaz controversy – ‘What is the hardest part of the job?’, England responds: “Making sure you do not make a mistake that impacts the outcome of the match.

“This is the worst thing for us.”

Tottenham winger Manor Solomon is set for an extended spell on the sidelines, talkSPORT understands.

The summer signing suffering a knee injury in training.

It means the Israeli ace, who has played four Premier League games since joining Spurs from Shakhtar Donetsk, could miss up to three months of action.

Ollie Watkins has been urged to commit his future to Aston Villa… by a teammate.

Striker Watkins has been in contract talks with the club for around six months without striking a deal.

He has scored seven goals this season – including two hat-tricks – and could earn an England recall, with Gareth Southgate naming his squad to face Australia and Italy on Thursday.

Defender Ezri Konsa signed a new five-year deal last month and wants Watkins to follow suit.

“For the club it’s really important, he scores goals and wins us games,” Konsa said, ahead of tomorrow’s Europa Conference League visit of Bosnian side Zrinjski Mostar.

“To have him extend his contract with us would be really important for us.

“I’ve known Ollie for some time now, I played with him at Brentford, I always knew how good he was.

“I knew what he could bring to the team, it’s clear what he does on matchdays.

“Hopefully he can continue that form and help the team.”

Morocco, Spain and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup.

However, the opening three matches of the tournament will be played in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.

A South American bid had been put forward to host the entire tournament, to mark the centenary of the very first World Cup.

FIFA have today announced their decision to award Uruguay (hosts of that first World Cup in 1930), current world champions Argentina and Paraguay the first three games was part of the tournament’s 100th anniversary.

Leyton Orient have paid tribute to supporter Derek Reynolds, who died after being taken unwell towards the end of the last night’s League One match against Lincoln.

After fans had gone on to the pitch to alert the referee to the medical emergency in the East Stand, the match was halted in the 82nd minute and eventually abandoned.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed on this morning that, despite extensive treatment and the combined efforts at the scene – which included an incident response officer, two medics in fast-response cars and an ambulance crew – the 74-year-old man had later been pronounced dead.

Orient have now revealed plans to pay tribute to Reynolds at Saturday’s home game against Reading, with his family invited as guests of the club.

“Leyton Orient Football Club is devastated to confirm that supporter Derek Reynolds has passed away,” a club statement read.

“Derek, 74, became unwell at Brisbane Road during Tuesday evening’s league fixture against Lincoln City.

“Despite the best efforts of Derek’s fellow supporters and medical professionals from the club’s on-site paramedics and doctors, Lincoln City and the London Ambulance Service, he sadly lost his life.

“Derek was a lifelong O’s supporter and he lived in Osbourne Road, a short walk from the ground, for many years. As well as being a lifelong fan, Derek was heavily involved in the club and managed the club’s tannoy system during the 1990s.

“The club will be paying tribute to Derek at Saturday’s home fixture against Reading and his family have been invited to the game as guests of the club.

“We would, once again, like to thank Derek’s fellow supporters for the way in which they conducted themselves on Tuesday night and acted to try and help the situation.”

Lincoln also passed on the club’s condolences.

“The thoughts of everyone connected with Lincoln City are with the family of the Leyton Orient supporter Derek Reynolds who passed away during Tuesday night’s game at Brisbane Road,” the Imps said in a post on social media.

Manchester United have endured their worst start to a season since 1986 following last night’s Champions League defeat at home to Galatasaray.

United have lost six of their opening ten games in all competitions, a tally not seen since the latter stages of Ron Atkinson’s managerial reign.

It’s a 37-year low for the Red Devils, who were booed off the pitch yesterday after another disappointing performance at Old Trafford.

And talkSPORT has collected the shocking stats that show just how record-breakingly bad Man United are under Ten Hag…

If Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Tottenham is replayed, Spurs fans are calling for their Champions League final to be replayed too.

Even former defender Jan Vertonghen, who played in that game, has joined the cause by giving the suggestion his backing on social media.

Tottenham fans have felt aggrieved about the result from the 2019 final in Madrid over Liverpool’s early opener.

The Reds were given a penalty inside the first minute after Sadio Mane kicked the ball and it hit the hand of Moussa Sissoko – a decision many supporters felt was harsh.

The early goal, converted from the spot by Mohamed Salah, effectively killed the spectacle, with Liverpool making it 2-0 late on through a clinical Divock Origi finish.

Chelsea captain Reece James given a one-match suspension and £90,000 fine after admitting to ‘improper, insulting and abusive words and behaviour towards a match official’.

The incident happened in the tunnel after the Blues’ Premier League defeat to Aston Villa.

James did not play in the game due to injury, but was spotted near the bench as he supported his teammates from the sidelines.

The ban effective for Chelsea’s next league match against Burnley, despite the defender not even being fit to play.

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold also spoke about the VAR saga.

But, unlike his manager, the right-back insists ‘the game is gone’ and the Reds players, staff and fans should now look to move on from the drama.

“Decisions are decisions,” he said. “Sometimes they go for you and sometimes against you.

“What happened at the weekend was very disappointing and frustrating but there’s nothing we can do as players now. The game has gone. We just have to move forward.

“We can’t control VAR as players. It’s the system in place. We have to trust the officials and hope they get the decisions right as often as possible.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has called for their match against Tottenham to be replayed due to the glaring VAR error which cost them the opening goal.

The fall-out from the VAR failure in Saturday’s defeat – in which officials wrongly disallowed Luis Diaz’s goal due to a misunderstanding of the on-field decision – is still being felt.

The Premier Game Match Officials Ltd released the audio conversation between officials and the VAR after a request from Liverpool, but Klopp said that had made little difference to their thinking.

“The audio didn’t change it at all. It is an obvious mistake,” he said. “I think there should be solutions for that. I think the outcome should be a replay.

“The argument against that would be it opens the gates. It is unprecedented, it has not happened before.

“I’m used to wrong and difficult decisions, but something like this never happened and so that is why I think a replay is the right thing to do.”

On whether the club had asked – or would ask – the Premier League for a replay formally, Klopp added: “At this stage we are still going through the information we have.”

A man has died after being taken unwell towards the end of Leyton Orient and Lincoln’s abandoned League One match at Brisbane Road last night.

A fan ran onto the pitch towards referee Stephen Martin to draw attention to the fact that a member of the public needed medical attention in the East Stand.

The match then continued for less than a minute before around 20 supporters sat down on the pitch at the home end to alert the referee to the continuing medical emergency, with play soon halted.

As paramedics appeared to give the man CPR on the side of the pitch, the referee took the teams off the field.

The match was abandoned an hour after the initial stoppage occurred and as the fans left the ground, the medical teams were still in attendance.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson has confirmed this afternoon the man had later been pronounced dead.

“We were called yesterday at 9:28pm to reports of a person becoming unwell at Leyton Orient Football Club, on Brisbane Road,” a London Ambulance Service spokesperson said in a statement.

“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an incident response officer, two medics in fast-response cars and an ambulance crew. Our first medic arrived in approximately four minutes.

“We treated a man at the scene, but very sadly, despite our teams’ best efforts, he was later pronounced dead.”

Leyton Orient were leading 1-0 when the game was stopped, through an early goal from Joe Pigott.

The English Football League will determine whether the fixture will be rescheduled, or if the result at the time of the abandonment will stand. The decision will be taken only after consultation with both clubs.

Liam Cooper, Greg Taylor and Jacob Brown have been recalled to the Scotland squad for the Euro 2024 qualifier in Spain.

Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland drops out along with, as expected, Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson.

Whitley Bay-born Anderson last week indicated he wanted more time to consider his international future, having left the last Scotland camp after two days following his first call-up to the full squad.

Leeds defender Cooper returns from injury while Celtic left-back Taylor replaces Kieran Tierney, who suffered a hamstring injury while playing for Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Luton striker Brown is yet to score in the Premier League since his move from Stoke, while Shankland has gone seven matches without scoring after hitting five goals in his first six games of the season for Hearts.

Scotland have won their opening five games and are six points ahead of second-placed Spain ahead of their trip to Seville on October 12.

Steve Clarke’s side then face France in a friendly in Lille five days later.

Wales captain Aaron Ramsey and Tottenham forward Brennan Johnson will miss next week’s vital Euro 2024 qualifier against Croatia.

Both players have been omitted from Rob Page’s squad for their friendly against Gibraltar on October 11 and Group D qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium on October 15.

Ramsey damaged his right knee in training last month and there are fears the 32-year-old midfielder may need surgery after missing Cardiff’s last five games.

Spurs ace Johnson sustained a hamstring injury in his side’s recent 2-2 draw at Arsenal and sat out Saturday’s win against Liverpool.

The pair’s absence is a huge blow to under-pressure Page, whose side sit fourth in their group after winning only two of their first five matches.

Johnson had been expected to be included after Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou said before the Liverpool game that his injury was “nothing too serious”.

Wales are also without QPR defender Morgan Fox and Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo (both knee), while Reading midfielder Charlie Savage and Liverpool defender Owen Beck have received their first senior team call-ups.

Leeds winger Daniel James returns to the squad after missing last month’s Euro 2024 qualifying victory in Latvia.

Bournemouth striker Kieffer Moore is available for the Croatia game after missing the last two Euro qualifiers due to the red card he received against Armenia in June.

The UK and Ireland’s bid to host Euro 2028 is expected to be approved by UEFA’s executive committee next week after Turkey pulled out of the running.

Liverpool star Alexis Mac Allister will enjoy a family reunion tomorrow in the Europa League.

The Reds will welcome Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise to Anfield, where Jurgen Klopp’s side will aim to make it two wins from two to start their European campaign following their 3-1 victory over LASK last time out.

But their No.10 will have extra motivation to get the win, in the form of sibling rivalry.

Yes, the Argentine’s brother plays for Union SG as a centre-back.

And his name is Kevin.

Kevin Mac Allister.

You can’t make it up…

A survey has revealed football fans are overwhelmingly in favour of referees audio being played out live to explain their decisions live.

OLBG asked 1,000 supporters about the topic and 90 per cent agreed a rugby-style system of open communication is the way forward to help the VAR process become more transparent in football.

The audio from Saturday’s decision to rule out Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham had been made public after a request from Liverpool to help fully understand how the blunder was made.

The clip has exposed the embarrassing mistake and miscommunication, with VAR told of their error mere seconds after it was made, only to refuse to break protocol and stop the game to ensure the correct decision was enforced.

And 90 of fans now agree referees should wear microphones that should be played out live to fans in the stadium and watching at home on TV to ensure the same mistake doesn’t happen again in the future.
