Gerrit Cole and Zac Gallen were named as the All-Star starting pitchers for the American League and National League, respectively, on Monday.
Both pitchers will be making their first career All-Star start when they take the mound on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
Gallen is an All-Star for the first time this year. Cole is a six-time All-Star, but he has only appeared in the game once, as a member of the Pirates in 2015, when he pitched behind NL starter Zack Greinke.
Cole, who said over the weekend that starting the Midsummer Classic would be a “dream come true,” is having another dominant season for the Yankees. The 32-year-old right-hander finished the first half with a 9-2 record, a 2.85 ERA and 123 strikeouts, putting him on pace for his third straight 200-K season in New York.
Gallen has been just as good for the D-backs. The 27-year-old right-hander is 11-3 with a 3.04 ERA and 125 strikeouts. He’s tied for the MLB lead in wins and leads the NL with a 1.048 WHIP.
Cole is the 12th Yankees pitcher to start the All-Star Game, but the first since Roger Clemens in 2001.
Gallen is the first D-backs pitcher to be the All-Star Game starter since Curt Schilling in 2002 and just the third Arizona pitcher to start a Midsummer Classic. Randy Johnson started the game the two seasons before Schilling in 2000 and ’01.
Last year’s All-Star Game starting pitchers were Shane McClanahan for the AL and Clayton Kershaw for the NL.
