Jamal Musiala made it two goals in two Euro 2024 matches before Germany captain Ilkay Gundogan sealed a 2-0 win over Hungary and qualification to the knockout stages with a game to spare.
Bayern Munich star Musiala was on target during the 5-1 demolition of Scotland in the Group A opener and became the first player in the tournament to double his tally after Gundogan benefitted from a slip by Willi Orban. A VAR check cleared the Barcelona midfielder of a foul on the Hungary centre-back.
Musiala also lashed into the side netting at the end of a move wonderfully orchestrated by Toni Kroos but Hungary proved to be far sterner opponents than Scotland as Marco Rossi’s side played a full part in an entertaining contest in Stuttgart.
Roland Sallai almost stole in to score in the first minute and the Freiburg forward had an equaliser ruled out in first-half stoppage time after Orban strayed offside to head Dominik Szoboszlai’s left-wing free-kick goalwards.
Hungary’s pressure continued during the second period and, after Julian Nagelsmann bolstered his Germany attack by bringing on Leroy Sane and Niclas Fullkrug, Barnabas Varga headed wastefully over at the far post.
Die Mannschaft needed breathing space and it arrived after a patient passing move pushed their opponents back, Maximillian Mittelstadt drove in a low cross and Gundogan timed his run to perfection to finish. There is a long way to go but the hosts look to be in ravishingly good order.

Germany vs. Hungary live updates, highlights from Euro 2024
Fulltime
Three minutes of additional time pass off without too much incident, save for a yellow card for an understandably frustrated Szoboszlai. Hungary played a full part in an enjoyable contest and will rue a couple of missed chances, most notably Varga’s header when the score was only 1-0. Germany responded with a gem of a goal through Gundogan. The hosts are through to the knockout rounds with a game to spare and look in very good order. Thanks for joining us.
90 mins: Off the line by Germany! Neuer comes for a cross and makes a hash of it. Kimmich spares him. Orban is down in a heap but won’t be getting a penalty.
88 mins: Sane in from the right flank and his stepped left-footed shot is deflected wide. Hungary look exhausted.
87 mins: So many joining the Germany attacks, including Kimmich. Fullkrug can’t direct his cross goalwards.
85 mins: Gundogan makes way to a rousing ovation. Undav comes on and will join Fullkrug in attack.
83 mins: Can heads over his own crossbar from a corner with the hulking substitute Adam in close attendance.
81 mins: You wonder if Hungary should just take the 2-0 here because they’re leaving themselves very exposed and this might become a hiding. Can strides forward on the break and feed Fullkurg. The Borussia Dortmund striker works possession to Fuhrich, whose wild shot over doesn’t go down especially well with Nagelsmann.
79 mins: Kroos almost releases Fullkrug with a deft flick. He’s been wonderful today.
77 mins: Sane lines up a free-kick from about 35 yards and balloons it into the stands. Only fair I take at least some responsibility for that.
75 mins: Sane goes alone this time, shifting on to his weaker right foot but forcing Gulasci into another very good save. It’s been a sharp cameo from the winger.
74 mins: Sane tees up Bayern Munich colleague Kimmich, who fires in a shot that Gulacsi saves smartly.
72 mins: Another double change for Germany. Can on for Andrich, who has a yellow card hanging over him. Nagelsmann plays to the gallery by bringing Hamburg favourite Fuhrich on for Musiala.
69 mins: There’s a swagger about Germany now. Kimmich fizzes across goal, just beyond Fullkrug.
67 mins: GOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Ilkay Gundogan!!!
Germany push Hungary back and back and back. It means there’s room for Gundogan to attack the box and stroke home from Mittelstadt’s low cross. A wonderfully well-worked goal and that should be that.

62 mins: Musiala flicks the ball towards Nagy, he wants a penalty for handball. No dice. Here’s the Bayern Munich attacker again, shimmying and shuffling and firing over from 25 yards.
60 mins: Big chance for Hungary! Varga gets up superbly above Tah at the back post. That was the hard part. He has to hit the target but heads over.
58 mins: Nagelsmann turns to his bench for a double change. Sane and Fullkrug on for Wirtz and Havertz.
55 mins: Fine work from Gulacsi. Gundogan engineers room to fire in a cross with some slick footwork. The Hungary goalkeeper pushes clear. Kroos’s attempt on the follow-up is deflected but the RB Leipzig man adjusts well to save.
53 mins: Nice counter-attack by Hungary, forcing Andrich to step in. Now back come Germany. A pleasing back and forth to what feels like a key period of the contest.
47 mins: A lightly haphazard block from Orban turns Rudiger’s drive behind. Havertz pulls on Fiola at the corner to concede a free-kick.
Kickoff: 2nd Half
Hungary get us back underway, stacking a load of players in the left-hand side and pumping the ball forward. Germany deal with it unfussily. No changes for either side.
Halftime
Germany are good value for their lead and looked to have Hungary exactly where they wanted them towards the end of that half. However, Sallai’s disallowed goal was a warning. Penny for Orban’s thoughts, who lost his footing for Musiala’s goal and was then fairly needlessly offside for the equaliser that wasn’t. Another good game at Euro 2024 this one.
45+2 mins: GOOOAAAAA….NO! Hungary think they’re level. Szoboszlai with a wonderful delivery from the left, flicked on by Orban. Neuer makes the save and Sallai nods home the rebound. But Orban strayed offside from the initial delivery.
44 mins: MUSIALA! Germany’s main man gets on the end of a wonderful move and crashes a wonderful shot into the side netting. A decent chunk of the crowd thought that was in.
41 mins: The Germany corner count ticks up to six as Bolla blocks Mittelstadt’s latest attempt. Oh and Vargas almost heads Kroos’ corner into his own net! Oooffff, Gulacsi was worried there for a second.
37 mins: Kerkez gets back to head behind under pressure from Kimmich. Kroos to take again. Mittelstadt fires a volley from the edge of the box, which is blocked. The Stuttgart left-back wins another corner. Hungary take care of this one but it suddenly looks like Rossi’s men need halftime to regroup.
32 mins: Kimmich darts into the Hungary box from right back and Dardai takes evasive action.
29 mins: Another chance for Hungary as Kerkez goes bombing down the left. He finds Szoboszlai, who’s shot is blocked behind by Tah’s last-minute intervention.
26 mins: Hungary almost hit back instantly! Rudiger brings down Kerkez to end a storming run. Szoboszlai forces Neuer to push away from his top corner and Vargas is unable to squeeze home the rebound from a tight angle.
22 mins: GOOOOAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Jamal Musiala!!!
Oh, Hungary undo their good work. Gundogan ghosts into the box again to collect Musiala’s pass. He can’t control it, Orban gets to it but then loses his footing. He wants a foul, he’s not getting one and Gundogan prods back to Musiala for the Bayern Munich star make it two in two at Euro 2024.

19 mins: Germany still not in full flight, but Musiala and Havertz combine nicely in a one-touch move but the latter’s pass for Gundogan is slightly overhit.
15 mins: It’s been an all-action start to the tournament for Bolla, who now raids down the Germany left. His cutback reaches Sallai on the edge of the box. The shot is blocked.
12 mins: Lovely delivery by Kroos from the left, Andrich fires goalwards and Bolla gets in the way. Kroos from the right this time and Hungary clear their lines.
11 mins: Almost 1-0 to Germany. Orban gets himself in an unseemly tangle underneath a bouncing ball, Havertz nips in and Gulacsi saves well before Bolla clears behind.
6 mins Germany half clear a Hungary corner from the left. The ball comes back in, breaks to Bolla, whose attempt is deflected behind by Andrich. The hosts deal with the next set piece but there are enough moments of encouragement out there at the moment for Rossi’s men.
5 mins: Havertz shimmies in from the right, shoots right footed but it’s very easy save for Gulacsi.
3 mins: Rudiger floats a ball in to Havertz, who has his back to goal and far too much room just inside the penalty area. The Arsenal man turns and Fiola manages to get the challenge in.
Kickoff: 1st Half
Off we go. I’m still not having that countdown. Oh, early opportunity for Hungary! Germany all over the place at the back, Kimmich caught napping and Neuer has to spring off his line to thwart Sallai.
8 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel and a packed crowd in Stuttgart are making themselves heard, not least the incredibly voluble Hungarian contingent. Here they come.
30 mins before kickoff: The teams are out going through their warmups in Stuttgart and we have confirmation that Germany will be wearing their, ahem, bold pink and purple change strip. Something of a break from tradition, some online wags mocked it as the “Barbie kit” but Adidias confirmed to The Athletic this week that it had become the fastest-selling away kit in the national team’s history.
Germany’s new pink kit has become the fastest-selling away shirt in the national team’s history.
The kit was released back in March and, the German FA (DFB) has confirmed to The Athletic, has broken the record for the most away shirts sold in history from when it went on release… pic.twitter.com/IBYMpV4Aq7

50 mins before kickoff: Germany boss Nagelsmann knows the opposition very well. Dominik Szonoszlai, Willi Orban and Peter Gulacsi all played under him during his time in charge of RB Leipzig. A few moments ago, Nagelsmann greeted the trio after waiting for them in the tunnel.
1 hr 10 mins before kickoff: Here’s the Germany team. As expected, Julian Nagelsmann has stuck with an unchanged side from the Scotland game. It means opening-night goalscorer Niclas Fullkrug has to be content with a place on the bench once more.

1 hr 20 mins before kickoff: Today’s early kickoff is in Group B, where Croatia have come from behind to lead a spirited Albania 2-1. Andrej Kramaric netted the equaliser for Zlatko Dalic’s side and joined an exclusive club in the process.
33 – Turning 33 years today, Andrej Kramaric is the third player to score on his birthday at a European Championship, after Jean-Francois Domergue in 1984 (27th birthday) and Wesley Sneijder in 2008 (24th Birthday). Party. #EURO2024 pic.twitter.com/9Ag5G24cpZ

1 hr 40 mins before kickoff: It will be fascinating to see how much that patchy recent form against Hungary counts for anything. It’s easy to forget that there was plenty of uncertainty around Germany heading into their home tournament before blowing Scotland out of the water. Die Mannschaft were knocked out in the group stage of the past two World Cups and only got through to the last 16 at Euro 2020 after snatching a late point against today’s opponents. England then ended their interest. But it’s only taken one authoritative performance for people top imagine this Germany team once again as the brutal tournament machine of old.
Hungary performed creditably enough in their defeat to Switzerland to suggest they can at least provide a true barometer of where Germany are at. How much of last Friday came down to the brilliance of Nagelsmann’s side and how much was down to Scotland being utterly dreadful?
2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Germany vs. Hungary in Euro 2024 Group A. The hosts were rampant as they hammered Scotland 5-1 on the opening night of the tournament but they are winless in their past three matches against Marco Rossi’s side.
