Astros right-handed pitcher Kendall Graveman underwent surgery on his right shoulder, General Manager Dana Brown announced on Tuesday. As a result of the procedure, which was performed last week, Graveman is expected to miss the 2024 season.
Graveman posted a 2.42 ERA (6ER/22.1IP) in 23 appearances in the regular season for the Astros in 2023 after being acquired from the White Sox via trade on July 28. At the end of the regular season, Graveman developed soreness in his right shoulder and was not able to pitch for the Astros in the postseason. Following the season, Graveman underwent a program of rest and rehab before returning to a flat ground throwing program in preparation for Spring Training. However, the discomfort in his shoulder returned after he began throwing.
Graveman, 33, is currently in his second stint with the Astros. He also spent the second half of the 2021 season with Houston after being acquired from Seattle via trade and helped the Astros advance to the World Series. In nine postseason appearances that season, Graveman was 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 11.0 innings of work. In his two stints with Houston overall, he has a 2.78 ERA (14ER/45.1IP) in 46 regular season appearances with 51 strikeouts.
Since 2021, Graveman has been one of the top relievers in the American League, posting a 2.74 ERA in 186 combined relief appearances with 24 saves and 51 holds for the Mariners, White Sox and Astros.
