Boris Becker will be Holger Rune’s coach in the 2024 season after enjoying a successful trial period with the world No. 8. Rune hired Becker as his coach in October after experiencing a slump in form and parting ways with Patrick Mouratoglou. His performances improved under Becker’s guidance, and the Dane even managed to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Exclusive: Rune ‘very happy’ with Becker joining him as coach
Boris Becker has confirmed he will continue to coach Holger Rune next season.
Despite being highly-rated, the 20-year-old Rune had been experiencing a slump in form since reaching the Wimbledon quarter-finals in July, losing 10 of his following 11 matches.
He subsequently parted ways with Patrick Mouratoglou, the former coach of Serena Williams, in September.
After hiring Becker, Rune made it to the semi-finals at the Swiss Indoors and the quarter-finals at the Paris Masters, qualifying for the prestigious end-of-season ATP Finals.
The world No. 8 got past Stefanos Tsitsipas in the tournament’s group stage, but lost to top seed Novak Djokovic and home favourite Jannik Sinner.
Becker shared a photo of himself with Rune on court at the ATP Finals as he announced he would be sticking around for next season.
“I am very excited to continue my partnership with Holger Rune in 2024,” Becker wrote. “We are building a team around Holger to bring out the best version of himself, on and off the court.”
Becker previously coached Djokovic from 2013 to 2016, helping the Serbian to six of his 24 Grand Slam titles.
Aside from this stint with Djokovic, the 55-year-old has spent the majority of his post-playing career in the media, working as a pundit and commentator – notably, for Eurosport.
Becker admitted last month that he was “proud” to be asked to be Rune’s coach.
“It makes me a little proud that he asked me,” he said. “The contact has existed for a long time. Now it was a very good fit.
“My calendar allows it and I have always been interested in Holger because he is on the tennis court with so much commitment and temperament.”
“It was my own decision to look around to see what I thought would fit me,” he said.
“I feel like I thought this would be good and it turned out to be good. So I’m very happy and pleased with that.”
