India v England, 2nd Test, Day 1 LIVE – Bashir strikes on debut but Jaiswal century inspires India

India 323-5 (Jaiswal 177, Bharat 11) Overs: 89

England are tempting the batters into having a go against Rehan too, setting an inviting field.

Bharat takes advantage as Rehan misses his length, dispatching a pull to the boundary. But a thick edge shows the value of England’s approach next up, with Root dipping his head in frustration as the ball flies wide of him at first slip.

Jaiswal finishes the over with a huge straight six. The home fans love that!

There’s a trainer on too, giving Jaiswal a bit of a massage around the elbow. The umpires are not convinced this is massively necessary and encourage the stoppage to be as short as possible.

India 307-5 (Jaiswal 168, Bharat 4) Overs: 88

England want Bharat to sweep off Bashir and he does so, getting away with the risk to find the rope. The reaction from the England fielders suggests they’d be quite happy to see the batter try that one again.

India 302-5 (Jaiswal 167, Bharat 0) Overs: 87

Rehan beats Bharat’s outside edge and then pushes the new batter back into his crease with a top-spinner that kicks on.

England’s attack have all been useful today, with Bashir getting through the most overs on his first day in Test cricket.

WICKET! India 301-5 (Jaiswal 166, Bharat 0) Overs: 86

Axar Patel caught by Rehan Ahmed bowled Shoaib Bashir for 27 (51b)

Bashir has his second of the day as Axar cuts him straight to Rehan at point. The ball got a bit big on him, but it was a loose shot and the all-rounder is furious with himself.

That gives England the wicket that they were so desperate for before the close.

KS Bharat is the new batter in.

India 300-4 (Jaiswal 165, Axar 27) Overs: 85

It’s another really nice over from Rehan, a maiden in fact, as India look to lock it down through until close.

India 300-4 (Jaiswal 165, Axar 27) Overs: 84

The 300 is up for India, and the 50 partnership between Jaiswal and Axar too.

It’s been an impressive day for India’s young opener and a run-heavy day for India on a pitch where they will be massively relieved to have cashed in on winning the toss.

Bashir’s over goes for three runs, all in singles.

India 297-4 (Jaiswal 164, Axar 25) Overs: 83

Rehan is picked off for five singles in an over as India keep things ticking over with the close of play not miles away now.

India 292-4 (Jaiswal 162, Axar 22) Overs: 82

India take a bit of time out of the day with an unscheduled drinks break that doesn’t please the umpires.

Bashir continues with the ball as play resumes, and there’s an umpire review at the end of the over as Jaiswal has a heave and misses, with Foakes whipping off the bails in a flash.

He never left his ground so the batter survives, but you have to be careful with Foakes about.

India 289-4 (Jaiswal 161, Axar 20) Overs: 81

No new ball for England just yet as Rehan has a change of ends.

He’s bowling really nicely, going through his variations and searching for a breakthrough.

India 287-4 (Jaiswal 160, Axar 19) Overs: 80

Jaiswal cuts Bashir fine, very fine, and fizzes it past the Root before he can barely react. That’s technically a drop as the slip fielder got his fingertips to the ball, but it would have been one of the best catches of all time had he snatched that. There was barely no chance.

Jaiswal moves on to 160 with a single and we’ve had 80 overs… which means England could potentially call for the new ball. Will they take it?

India 282-4 (Jaiswal 155, Axar 19) Overs: 79

Root bowls after drinks, with the possible new ball just two overs away.

There are 12 overs remaining in the first day – a Friday that has been dominated by the brilliance of Jaiswal.

Axar puts one away beautifully through the leg side, showing that he’s a serious proposition with the bat. It will come as no surprise – Axar’s record in home conditions with the bat has been superb.

India 277-4 (Jaiswal 154, Axar 15) Overs: 78

Rehan’s impressive spell comes to an end and it’s Bashir who gets a bowl.

He beats Axar with one that turns quite a bit off straight, and he gets some good bounce that catches the shoulder of the bat and runs away for a couple.

That’s encouraging for England’s spinners, although the batters will be hoping that it’s just Bashir’s height that’s drawing the turn and not an early sign of gremlins in the surface.

150 for Jaiswal! India 272-4 (Jaiswal 151, Axar 13) Overs: 77

This has been a magnificent innings from Jaiswal, and he brings up his 150 with a dismissive cover drive as Root comes back into the attack.

The pitch in this game feels like one where you have to cash in if you get in, and Jaiswal has certainly done that, helping his side up to a first-innings score that will put pressure on England regardless of what happens from here.

Axar punishes Root at the end of an expensive over with back-to-back fours.

India 259-4 (Jaiswal 146, Axar 5) Overs: 76

Stokes held Rehan back for a long time today, only giving him a bowl shortly before tea.

But he’s been given quite a run since then, getting into his ninth over of the innings.

A leg-side line is punished by Axar, but the boundary is the only scoring shot in the over.

India 255-4 (Jaiswal 146, Axar 1) Overs: 75

It’s another over for Anderson, who is bowling beautifully but must have been considering saving himself for the option of the new ball, which is rapidly approaching.

Stokes and Anderson have had a number of extended chats, and their strategy around that new ball must surely be one of the big reasons for their discussions.

It’s been a pressurised period for India, with England bowling well, so perhaps they’re considering plugging away with the old cherry. We’ll find out soon enough.

Two runs come off the over courtesy of a picturesque punch through the off side.

India 253-4 (Jaiswal 144, Axar 1) Overs: 74

Rehan’s getting nice flight and a bit of extra bounce. India are watching him like a hawk after that top-spinning wicket and his latest over goes for three safe singles.

India 250-4 (Jaiswal 142, Axar 0) Overs: 73

England must have been considering giving Anderson a rest, but that wicket means he bowls another in the hope of having a crack at the new batter. He probes away in that channel just outside off stump, asking questions of Jaiswal and Axar in an over that costs one single.

WICKET! India 249-4 (Jaiswal 141, Axar 0) Overs: 72

Rajat Patidar bowled Rehan Ahmed for 32 (72b)

Rehan conjures up a wicket out of nowhere. He gets a top-spinning ball to bounce on Patidar, who can’t control his defensive shot and scrambles in vain to stop the ball bouncing back onto the stumps. England really needed that!

Axar Patel is the new batter, in at six ahead of Bharat, and he very nearly chops on, hammering the ball into his back pad.

That’s a wicket maiden for Rehan, who has given England the spark of inspiration that he’s in the team to provide.

India 249-3 (Jaiswal 141, Patidar 32) Overs: 71

Anderson’s spell runs into a fourth over. The contrast between his threat and that of Wood in the first Test is really interesting. Wood is all about pace, targeting the stumps and not worrying about runs so much. In contrast, Anderson builds pressure and constantly probes at the batters with immaculate line and length. Both can be effective on Indian pitches and Anderson’s playing his role well today.

He beats Jaiswal with a lovely delivery that leaves the centurion a tad. It’s a maiden for Anderson, who is moving a bit like a 41-year-old.

India 249-3 (Jaiswal 141, Patidar 32) Overs: 70

Rehan continues, and India nudge him around for four singles.

India 245-3 (Jaiswal 139, Patidar 30) Overs: 69

Anderson is bowling just as tight as England would have hoped when naming him in this team, but there’s nothing coming for him from the pitch or through the air.

The pitch hasn’t really broken up yet and it’s a green outfield, so it’s not peak reverse conditions. That sort of movement will likely be more prominent later in the Test… and Anderson will hope England are still in the match when he gets the chance to bowl in India’s second innings.

India 244-3 (Jaiswal 139, Patidar 29) Overs: 68

Oh that is so good from Jaiswal. He’s got plenty of shots in his armoury, but surely none are as pretty to watch as his lofted drive, and he pulls it out to cream Rehan into the stands for six. That’s lovely.

He finishes off the over with a delightful late cut for four, meaning ten runs come off the over.

India 234-3 (Jaiswal 129, Patidar 29) Overs: 67

It’s a collector’s item as Anderson oversteps for a no ball. That’s one of two runs off another decent over, with Anderson trying to find some reverse swing. There’s not much forthcoming though, and India continue to look comfortable.

India 232-3 (Jaiswal 128, Patidar 29) Overs: 66

India have made a comfortable start to this final session, and five runs come off a Rehan over to tick runs over.

India 227-3 (Jaiswal 126, Patidar 26) Overs: 65

England turn back to Anderson, who has been really outstanding today, showcasing all of his mastery with the red ball.

There’s so little for him to work with, but he’s building pressure and asking questions of the Indian batters, and his latest over is seen out for a maiden.

India 227-3 (Jaiswal 126, Patidar 26) Overs: 64

It’s Rehan who starts with the ball after tea and it’s lovely over, getting one to grip late in the over and whizz past Patidar’s bat.

The story of the afternoon session

India 225/3 – Jaiswal unbeaten on 125*; England struggle on flat surface

India have added 122 runs for just one wicket in an afternoon session that has been dominated by the majestic Jaiswal.

India’s watchable opener is still there on 125* and looks like he could go on to score a really big knock on a bit of a dream batting surface.

There’s not much turn on offer and very little movement for Anderson either, so England need a bit of inspiration if they are to halt India’s progress after tea.

Hartley picked up the one wicket to fall in the session, removing Shreyas for 27 thanks to a superb low catch by Foakes behind the stumps.

And credit must go to the age-defying Anderson, who has been the pick of the bowlers with his 1-24 from 11 superb overs.

But the joy and momentum after Bashir’s debut wicket and Anderson’s removal of Gill feels a little while ago, with India set to resume on 225/3 and eyeing a big first-innings score having won the toss and batter first in Visakhapatnam.

TEA: India 225-3 (Jaiswal 125, Patidar 25) Overs: 63

Bashir finishes up the session with a tidy but harmless over.

That’s tea, with India well-placed to kick on in the evening on this decent batting surface.

India 223-3 (Jaiswal 125, Patidar 23) Overs: 62

Rehan’s bowling nicely here in his little mini-spell before tea.

Just one single comes off his over.

India 222-3 (Jaiswal 125, Patidar 22) Overs: 61

India are going along at a good scoring rate in this afternoon session, and a stunning late cut from Jaiswal off Bashir goes all the way to the boundary to keep the runs flowing.

The home side will definitely be the happier with the afternoon session so far, but it’s a reasonably long tail for India in this Test and England can still restrict this total if they can find a breakthrough soon.

India 218-3 (Jaiswal 121, Patidar 22) Overs: 60

It’s Rehan time! Stokes finally turns to his young leg-spinner, and he gets some nice loop in a first over that almost yields a caught-and-bowled, with Patidar, chipping just over the bowler’s head.

India 215-3 (Jaiswal 119, Patidar 21) Overs: 59

Root’s going for a few runs here, and Patidar keeps the boundaries flowing as he reverse-sweeps to the rope and follows up with an elegant drive.

It’s always hard to assess a pitch until both teams have batted, but this does feel like a bit of a batting paradise and the sort of surface that England will really enjoy if they can get on it in the first couple of days.

The surface is dry though, with some dark patches forming, so turn will surely come later in the Test.

India 207-3 (Jaiswal 119, Patidar 13) Overs: 58

It’s a first boundary for Patidar as he dispatches a square drive off Bashir. The youngster over-pitched slightly and got the treatment.

India 202-3 (Jaiswal 119, Patidar 8) Overs: 57

Root comes back into the attack as England mix things up. It’s becoming noteworthy that Stokes hasn’t turned to Rehan at all today. Perhaps it’s because there’s so little in the surface he feels it would he a hospital pass for the leggie?

A flurry of singles brings up the 200 for India.

India 197-3 (Jaiswal 117, Patidar 5) Overs: 56

Bashir has looked right at home on his first day of Test cricket and puts together another nice and tidy over that goes for one run.

The youngster’s figures of 1-59 from 17 are the most economical of the three spinners to have featured so far in the game.

India 196-3 (Jaiswal 117, Patidar 4) Overs: 55

You’ve got to hand it to Jaiswal, he’s made the most of a decent start and has worked India into a strong position here. It does feel like a good pitch for batting, so we won’t know how good this start is until both team’s have batted, but runs on the board are never a bad thing.

He blocks out the final ball of a decent Hartley over.

India 195-3 (Jaiswal 117, Patidar 3) Overs: 54

It’s another decent enough over from Bashir, but a couple float onto the legs for easy singles.

India 193-3 (Jaiswal 116, Patidar 2) Overs: 53

That’s a hint of a chance for England as Jaiswal slices a hack just wide of Bairstow. He hasn’t got much wrong today, but that shot was a bit too reckless.

India 186-3 (Jaiswal 109, Patidar 2) Overs: 52

Jaiswal continues to look sublime out in the middle and produces a dreamy drive through extra cover off Bashir.

WICKET! India 180-3 (Jaiswal 104, Patidar 1) Overs: 51

Shreyas Iyer caught by Ben Foakes bowled Tom Hartley for 27 (59b)

England desperately needed the breakthrough, and it’s Hartley who gets it. One keeps a little low on Shreyas and he under edges through to Foakes, who catches well.

In fact, that’s a bit of an understatement. It’s a terrific catch, his second excellent grab of the match, done so smoothly that it almost looks simple.

India 175-2 (Jaiswal 104, Shreyas 23) Overs: 50

Bashir is bowling a nice line and length and India play it safe against him.

CENTURY! India 173-2 (Jaiswal 103, Shreyas 22) Overs: 49

Yashasvi Jaiswal 103* from 154 balls (11 fours and three sixes)

What a way to bring up your 100! Jaiswal latches on to a Hartley delivery and pumps it straight into the crowd, reaching his century with a maximum.

He celebrates in style and this has been a really outstanding knock.

India 164-2 (Jaiswal 94, Shreyas 22) Overs: 48

Just one single comes for Bashir’s over after drinks. England need a wicket here. It’s all looking very comfortable for India at the moment.

Cook and Finn discuss Bashir’s debut day

Shoaib Bashir already has a wicket to his name in Test cricket, that of India skipper Rohit Sharma.

And TNT Pundits Alastair Cook and Steven Finn chatted about the young off-spinner attributes earlier in the coverage.

India 163-2 (Jaiswal 93, Shreyas 22) Overs: 47

England are really rattling through the overs today, and the commentators discuss on the TNT Sports coverage how it could be about trying to halt the damage to their World Test Championship standing.

There’s more than a hint of the horse having already bolted there – England have lost 19 points to slow over-rate punishments already in the WTC, which means they should be in the top three but are in fact second from bottom.

Hartley’s decent over goes for three singles and it’s time for some drinks.

India 160-2 (Jaiswal 91, Shreyas 21) Overs: 46

It’s punishing batting from Jaiswal, who is dispatching anything wayward from England’s inexperienced spin attack now.

A half-volley from Bashir is absolutely hammered back down the ground for four more. He’s got his sights set on a century here.

India 155-2 (Jaiswal 86, Shreyas 21) Overs: 45

Jaiswal’s juices are really flowing now. He gets a bit lucky with a thick edge that flies narrowly wide of Root at slip. But the opener follows that up with back-to-back boundaries, punishing over-pitched deliveries from Hartley to milk 13 runs from the over.

England are under a bit of pressure and Stokes has called a bit of conference between his leadership team to decide how to get this day back under control.

India 142-2 (Jaiswal 73, Shreyas 21) Overs: 44

Bashir comes back into the attack, looking to add to his early wicket of Rohit.

It’s a nice over but is seen off by Jaiswal.

India 139-2 (Jaiswal 70, Shreyas 21) Overs: 43

The fifty partnership comes up between these two as they calmly negotiate another Hartley over. India have found a spell of control since lunch.

India 137-2 (Jaiswal 69, Shreyas 20) Overs: 42

Jaiswal is looking very comfortable now, and he injects a burst of energy into proceedings with a huge lofted drive that flies all the way for six off Root.

England are starting to look a little bit devoid of ideas with the ball as India take control of this afternoon session.

India 130-2 (Jaiswal 63, Shreyas 19) Overs: 41

Hartley drags one down at the end of the over and Jaiswal’s eyes light up. He pulls it dismissively away for four to move on to 63.

India 125-2 (Jaiswal 59, Shreyas 18) Overs: 40

Root things he’s got an edge down the leg side off Iyer, but Foakes disagrees and Stokes goes with the keeper. There’s no sign of anything on the replays.

Just one single comes from the over as India bed in for a long day at the crease. That’s the plan at least. They will want a big score here on a surface that is pretty comfortable for batting right now.

India 124-2 (Jaiswal 59, Shreyas 17) Overs: 39

Anderson’s little spell after lunch comes to an end as Hartley replaces him. It’s a good start from the left-armer, but a couple of deliveries slide onto the pads for easy singles.

India 122-2 (Jaiswal 58, Shreyas 16) Overs: 38

Root is back into the attack as Stokes shuffles his pack. We’ve not seen anything of Rehan Ahmed yet, but the rest of the England attack have all seen plenty of overs.

It’s an expensive over from Root, who goes for five singles and a boundary. The four comes off one of those interesting little false-seamers that he bowls occasionally, but it sat up for Shreyas to pull it away with ease.

India 113-2 (Jaiswal 55, Shreyas 10) Overs: 37

Anderson is remarkable. His appearance in this Test makes him the oldest male fast bowler to ever appear in the format.

But age is just a number and the newly-coiffed Anderson is proving that with a wonderful display so far today.

He’s using all his tricks to extract everything he can muster from a pitch that doesn’t have much in it for the quicks, and he very nearly bags a second wicket of the day in a over that sees one ball skim past Jaiswal’s edge and another bottom-edged by Shreyas just past his own stumps.

India 112-2 (Jaiswal 54, Shreyas 10) Overs: 36

It’s a maiden for Hartley, who has a couple of close fielders in.

India 112-2 (Jaiswal 54, Shreyas 10) Overs: 35

India have had enough of sitting in against Anderson and a couple of aggressive pulls from Iyer gets the crowd excited. Both go for singles.

India 109-2 (Jaiswal 53, Shreyas 8) Overs: 34

Stokes loves a one-over mini spell. Hartley replaces Root to keep India on their toes and he gets his length right in a tidy over.

This pitch isn’t turning anywhere near as much as the Hyderabad surface did on day one, but it looks like it’s drying out already and you’d expect lots of turn later in the match.

India 106-2 (Jaiswal 52, Shreyas 6) Overs: 33

Anderson comes back for his ninth over of the innings already, and it’s a typically controlled one that, yielding just one single.

India 105-2 (Jaiswal 52, Shreyas 5) Overs: 32

It’s Root who takes the first over after lunch, and he gets one to really grip midway through the over.

Jaiswal gives the pitch an annoyed stare – this surface looks like it should play pretty flat for the first couple of days.

In fact, Sir Alastair Cook made an interesting point in the TNT Sports studio at lunch, saying that the unusually conservative approach of Rohit was an indication that India know they need big first-innings runs to maximise winning the toss on this surface.

The story of the morning session

India 103-2 – Jaiswal unbeaten on 51*; wickets for Bashir and Anderson

India won the toss and opted to bat first on a pitch that looks like it will offer plenty of runs in the first few days, with turn expected later in the Test.

England’s team was known prior to the toss, with Shoaib Bashir making his debut and James Anderson replacing Mark Wood as the lone pacer. But India made three changes to their team, with Rajat Patidar and Kuldeep Yadav replacing the injured KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja, and Mukesh Kumar coming in for Mohammed Siraj.

England started with a lot of control as James Anderson bowled tight in a new-ball partnership with Joe Root. But India were looking comfortable until debutant Bashir bagged his first wicket in Test cricket, luring Rohit Sharma into an edge down the leg side that was caught by Ollie Pope to send the India skipper back for 14.

India upped the scoring rate significantly in the final half hour of the session after a circumspect start to the match, with Yashasvi Jaiswal reaching 51* shortly before the interval.

But England ensured they will be the slightly happier of the two sides at lunch when Anderson got rewards for a skilful start to his series, drawing an edge from Shubman Gill (34) that Ben Foakes caught well behind the stumps.

India will resume on 103/2 with Jaiswal (51*) and Shreyas Iyer (4*) looking to kick on while the going is good in Visakhapatnam.

Lunch: India 103-2 (Jaiswal 51, Shreyas 4) Overs: 31

Iyer gets off the mark with a sumptuous straight drive off Anderson’s final ball of the morning session.

India’s 100 is up as the players head off for lunch, with England the happier of the two sides after picking up two wickets on a pitch that looks decent for batting right now.

FIFTY! India 99-2 (Jaiswal 51, Shreyas 0) Overs: 30

A full toss from Bashir get the treatment from Jaiswal, who dispatches it into the upper tier on the on-side with a monster maximum.

A misfield in the deep off the next ball hands him a four and that’s his half-century, coming off 89 balls.

Any questions for Cooky and Finny?

WICKET! India 85-2 (Jaiswal 41, Shreyas 0) Overs: 29

Shubman Gill caught by Ben Foakes bowled James Anderson for 34 (46b)

The over starts with a definite edge from Gill off Anderson, but he gets plenty of wood on it and it fizzes past Root at slip and races away to the boundary.

But Anderson finally gets the reward for what has been a wonderful display of control in this first session, drawing yet another edge from Gill with a beauty that Foakes pouches well behind the stumps.

Shreyas Iyer is the new batter.

India 85-1 (Jaiswal 41, Gill 30) Overs: 28

Stokes and his management of young spinners has been a big talking point of the week, and he keeps Bashir on to give him a really long opening spell in Test cricket and settle the youngster into this series.

It’s typical of Stokes and the evidence suggests it will yield big rewards in the long-term. But in the short-term Bashir misses his length a couple of times and is slow-swept and driven to the boundary off consecutive deliveries as Gill gives the crowd something to cheer. That’s lovely batting.

India 75-1 (Jaiswal 40, Gill 21) Overs: 27

It’s a change for England as Anderson comes back into the attack. His miserly figures take a hit as a thick outside edge off from Gill races away to the boundary.

Was that a controlled shot or did Anderson draw the edge? It’s quite hard to tell, but the England bowler is not happy about going for the runs.

India 70-1 (Jaiswal 39, Gill 17) Overs: 26

Bashir is getting some nice flight and dip from that high release point. Two early singles are on the only runs to go from his eighth over of the match.

India 68-1 (Jaiswal 38, Gill 16) Overs: 25

It’s relatively comfortable for India right now, as they take three singles off Hartley and keep things ticking over.

Time for a bowling change soon perhaps?

India 65-1 (Jaiswal 37, Gill 14) Overs: 24

India milk a Bashir over for four singles as this pair rebuild.

It’s been good from Bashir overall this morning though. He’s picked up the one wicket to fall of course, but he’s also been the most economical spinner.

India 61-1 (Jaiswal 35, Gill 12) Overs: 23

It’s another good over from Hartley, who has settled into this series nicely. One hard-run two comes from it.

India 59-1 (Jaiswal 35, Gill 10) Overs: 22

Jaiswal goes for the sweep against Bashir and gets a bit lucky as he loops it just wide of Hartley at short fine leg. Stokes looks frustrated.

Three singles come from Bashir’s sixth over.

India 56-1 (Jaiswal 34, Gill 8) Overs: 21

One single comes from a Hartley over as he responds well to that wayward set last time out.

England have kept things tight on the whole in this first morning on a pitch that has something in it for the bowlers but is far from a rank turner.

India 55-1 (Jaiswal 34, Gill 7) Overs: 20

Bashir must be on cloud nine, and he gets through another decent over. There are signs that Gill is going to be proactive against the youngster, using his feet and coming down the track to the one ball he faces in the over.

India 53-1 (Jaiswal 33, Gill 6) Overs: 19

This is a very attacking pair out in the middle for India and they go after Hartley, hitting him for 12 off an over with two full tosses getting the treatment.

WICKET! India 41-1 (Jaiswal 26, Gill 1) Overs: 18

Rohit Sharma caught by Ollie Pope bowled Shoaib Bashir for 14 (41b)

Wow, what a moment for the debutant!

Bashir has got the first wicket of the day and it’s a massive one as he lures a nick off Rohit as the India skipper looks to turn one into leg, and it is superbly caught at leg slip by Pope. The young spinner’s reaction says it all. Stunning.

India 40-0 (Jaiswal 26, Rohit 14) Overs: 17

Hartley continues after drinks and he resumes with a maiden.

He’s bowling really nicely is the left-armer, getting one to dip on Jaiswal that has Foakes momentarily excited about a stumping. A lbw shout later in the over has England interested, but Stokes opts against reviewing and replays say it was going over the top.

India 40-0 (Jaiswal 26, Rohit 14) Overs: 16

Bashir continues. On commentary Kevin Pietersen is rebuking India for allowing the debutant spinner time to settle, accusing this opening pair of not attacking him enough.

The over goes for one single, and that’s drinks.

India 39-0 (Jaiswal 25, Rohit 14) Overs: 15

England are giving India something to think about, with Hartley returning after just the one over from Root. It’s a nice over, with Rohit getting away with a mistimed charge off one that Hartley gives a bit more flight.

India 37-0 (Jaiswal 24, Rohit 13) Overs: 14

Bashir continues and he gets one slightly wrong midway through the over, which is cut away for four by Jaiswal.

The pitch looks decent for batting at the moment, and India will want to make hay while they can, with bigger turn expected later in the match.

India 32-0 (Jaiswal 20, Rohit 12) Overs: 13

Root has changed ends, which means just the one over first up for Hartley. Jaiswal leans into a wide one first up and drives it beautifully to the rope.

India 28-0 (Jaiswal 16, Rohit 12) Overs: 12

What a moment this is as young Bashir makes his first appearance in Test cricket. He’s only played seven first-class matches in total in his fledgling career, but England have seen something in him and he gets a change to roll his arm over for the first time.

The field is a kind one from Stokes, operating some protection for the youngster early on, and that helps him settle into a rhythm straight away.

A Jaiswal single off the final ball is the only run from Bashir’s first for England.

India 27-0 (Jaiswal 15, Rohit 12) Overs: 11

Hartley comes into the attack for the first time in the Test. The left-arm spinner had a memorable second outing in Hyderabad of course, but his bowling in the first innings was patchy at best. Will he be on it from the start here?

Four runs come from a reasonable first over, all in singles.

India 23-0 (Jaiswal 13, Rohit 10) Overs: 10

It’s quite a steady and watchful start to the session from India, who knock away a Root over for three singles.

There’s been intent from Jaiswal against Root, but the scoring rate very un-Bazball right now.

India 20-0 (Jaiswal 12, Rohit 8) Overs: 9

Anderson continues into the fifth over of his spell. He finishes another lovely over with a beauty that bends past the outside edge of Jaiswal’s bat.

The openers have done a decent job making it through this Anderson challenge. The ball will be losing its shine by now and things should get a little bit easier against England’s veteran.

India 19-0 (Jaiswal 12, Rohit 7) Overs: 8

An Anderson misfield adds a couple more to India’s total as India successfully negotiate another Root over.

Will we see the hero of the first Test, Hartley, soon? Or will Stokes bring Bashir into the attack early?

India 15-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 6) Overs: 7

Anderson is bowling so well here, with Rohit in all sorts of trouble. A wonderful wobble-seam delivery catches Rohit on the front pad and flies straight through to the keeper on the full, prompting a big appeal. It’s slightly too high for the lbw and replays show that it was close but didn’t find an edge or a glove, so Stokes is wise in opting against the review.

It’s a maiden for England’s 41-year-old solitary pacer.

India 15-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 6) Overs: 6

Rohit misses out on a juicy Root full toss first up, only picking up a single.

Jaiswal goes on the attack in the remainder of the over, but it’s all a bit frenetic and he doesn’t manage to add to the score.

India 14-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 5) Overs: 5

Anderson is right on the money as he continues with this new ball, drawing a feather of an inside edge onto the pads before beating the outside edge of Rohit’s bat with another one that talks. One single comes off the over, courtesy of another inside edge.

India 13-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 4) Overs: 4

That’s nice from Root, who goes for just the one single from his decent second over.

India will be happy enough to see off this new ball and settle into the morning’s play, particularly given they’ve picked a slightly weaker-looking batting line-up to include the five specialists bowlers and keep KS Bharat in the side.

India 12-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 3) Overs: 3

Anderson bowls a beauty first up in his second over, getting the ball to leave Rohit just a nudge and sneak past the outside edge and through to the keeper. The India captain exhales dramatically – that was a peach to get in his first ball of the Test.

A hint of width gets Rohit off strike, and Jaiswal is on the receiving end of another gem from Anderson, which he plays all around.

The television coverage shows an interesting set of stats and graphics about Anderson’s wickets in India over the last 12 years, most of which have come with the older ball and reverse swing.

India 9-0 (Jaiswal 9, Rohit 0) Overs: 2

Joe Root takes the new ball for England and is immediately targeted by Jaiswal, who flays him in the air through cover and away for four. That’s a real statement of intent from the opener, and he follows it up with another lash through the off side for four.

India 1-0 (Jaiswal 1, Rohit 0) Overs: 1

It is Anderson who gets the Test underway, bowling in the 22nd consecutive calendar year of his career.

He starts with a couple of looseners that bend down leg, and Jaiswal knocks the last ball of a tight over for a single to keep the strike.

It’s a low-key way to start the series, but that’s exactly why England picked Anderson – get through the overs, build some pressure and keep control of the scoring rate.

04:00 – Watch this series LIVE on TNT Sports

TNT Sports have the rights to broadcast this full series in the UK, so tune in to TNT Sports and discovery+ throughout February to watch this series unfold. The second Test starts on Friday 2 February.

03:55 – India won the toss and will bat first

Whoever guesses right at the toss has a big advantage in Indian conditions, and it was Rohit Sharma who called it right, opting to have a bat first. That could be a big moment in this Test – the general consensus is that this pitch will hold up well for a couple of days before breaking up.

03:55 – The two teams

India: Rohit, Jaiswal, Gill, Patidar, Iyer, Bharat, Ashwin, Axar, Bumrah, Kumar, Kuldeep

England: Crawley, Duckett, Pope, Root, Bairstow, Stokes, Foakes, Rehan, Hartley, Bashir, Anderson.

03:50 – Hello and welcome

Good morning. Anyone else feeling oddly awake at 4am?

It’s almost time for the second Test between India and England in Visakhapatnam, with the first ball of the match just minutes away.

My name’s Tom Bennett and I’ll be here throughout the morning to bring you over-by-over coverage of a day’s cricket that I, for one, can’t wait to watch.

03:45 – A reminder of what happened in the first Test

England’s win in Hyderabad last week was one of their all-time great Test wins, inspired by Ollie Pope’s stunning century and debutant Tom Hartley’s match-winning fourth day.

It’s fair to say that England’s approach to the series, particularly with the bat, caught India thoroughly off-guard, and it’s going to be really interesting to see how the home side respond in this second Test.

To re-live all the drama of that extraordinary fourth day, check out the full coverage of England’s brilliant win:

03:40 – England’s massive opportunity

Few pundits and fans gave England a prayer in this series prior to the opening match. And it wasn’t hard to see why.

India’s last series defeat in home conditions was way back in 2012 to an England side inspired by Swann, Panesar, Cook and Pietersen. And the Indian men’s Test team had only lost three home matches in total since then, prior to the Test in Hyderabad.

It’s those sorts of stats that put England’s 28-run win into context. And they now have a genuine chance of doing something extraordinary on this tour.

India were already without Virat Kohli, and are now going to be missing the experienced pair of Rahul and Jadeja, meaning that it will be a relatively unproven side who face England in Visakhapatnam this week.

It’s still India playing at home, so they remain favourites to win the match and the series. But England could barely have dreamed of a chance as good as this to go into a 2-0 lead.

Bashir to make debut as Leach replacement in second Test, Anderson also in

Shoaib Bashir will make his senior England debut in the second Test against India as a replacement for the injured Jack Leach.

Bashir, 20, was a late arrival in India after visa issues delayed him, but he has immediately been added to the team for England’s second outing in India with the news that Leach would miss the game with injury.

The Somerset off-spinner is one of two changes, with veteran seamer James Anderson coming in for Durham pace bowler Mark Wood, who failed to take a wicket in the first Test.

It will be Anderson’s 184th Test cap, in contrast to the three spinners who will make up the frontline attack with him, who have three caps between them.
