July 30: RHP Nathan Eovaldi placed on 15-day IL; RHP Grant Anderson recalled from Triple-A Round Rock
Eovaldi was placed on the injured list, retroactive to July 27, with a right forearm strain. The right-hander has made one start since the All-Star break — six shutout innings on July 18 in a win over Tampa Bay at Globe Life Field. Eovaldi has gone 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA for Texas.
July 28: C Jonah Heim to 10-day IL; OF Bubba Thompson recalled from Triple-A Round Rock
With Heim landing on the IL and the Rangers already having two other catchers on the active roster, Thompson was recalled for his second stint with the big league club this season. He has batted .242 with one home run and 13 RBIs across 91 big league games over two seasons but has largely been used as a pinch-runner.
July 28: RHP Owen White optioned to Triple-A Round Rock; RHP Josh Sborz activated
Sborz posted a 4.54 ERA in 29 relief appearances before he was placed on the 15-day IL on July 15 with right biceps tendinitis. He tossed a scoreless inning for Round Rock on July 26 during his rehab assignment. White, ranked by MLB Pipeline as the club’s top pitching prospect, tossed four innings of relief for the Rangers. He has posted a 3.61 ERA over 16 starts with Double-A Frisco and Round Rock this season.
C Jonah Heim (left wrist tendon strain)
Expected return: TBD
Heim left Texas’ July 26 matchup against the Astros after swinging and missing a curveball thrown by Framber Valdez in the fourth inning. After Heim was evaluated by doctors the following day, it was determined he needs rest over the next few weeks in order to let the inflammation go down. Surgery may be an option, but Heim’s pain tolerance will determine whether it’s during the offseason or during the season. He will be reevaluated in two to three weeks. (Last updated: July 28)
SS Corey Seager (right thumb sprain)
Expected return: Early August
Seager landed on the 10-day injured list for the second time in 2023, this time with a right thumb sprain. X-rays taken on July 21 were negative, and an MRI on July 22 showed no structural damage, so Seager should only need around the full 10 days to let the inflammation subside. The shortstop missed a month earlier this season with a hamstring strain, but has slashed .348/.402/.647 since his return on May 17. (Last updated: July 22)
RHP Jacob deGrom (right UCL repair surgery)
Expected return: Second half of 2024 at the earliest
A day after deGrom was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day IL on June 5, the club announced that the veteran right-hander would need to have UCL repair surgery on his right elbow. He underwent the successful procedure on June 12, and on June 18, deGrom said that he hopes to return in August 2024. General manager Chris Young made sure to point out that timelines are fluid when it comes to injuries.
It was the second similar operation for the 34-year-old deGrom, who underwent Tommy John surgery for the first time following his debut season as a professional in 2010.
deGrom left his April 28 start against the Yankees in the fourth inning with what was announced postgame as right forearm tightness. He went on the IL the following day after an MRI exam showed elbow inflammation. deGrom also left his start on April 17 against the Royals due to right wrist soreness, but he returned for his next scheduled outing against the A’s on April 23. RHP Jake Odorizzi (right shoulder fatigue)
Expected return: 2024
Odorizzi will miss the entire 2023 season after undergoing an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right shoulder. The right-hander entered camp with shoulder fatigue and did not throw against live batters at all this spring.
General manager Chris Young said that, after continued evaluation, team physician Dr. Keith Meister decided they had exhausted all non-surgical options for his rehab. (Last updated: April 7)
LHP Brett Martin (left shoulder)
Expected return: Mid-2023
Martin’s health was addressed during the salary negotiation in arbitration; he underwent surgery on his left shoulder in late January. The timeline for his return is unclear.
Martin posted a 4.14 ERA out of the bullpen in 2022, but he landed on the IL with a strained left shoulder in late September. He was moved to the 60-day IL on Feb. 17 to make room for outfielder Robbie Grossman on the 40-man roster. Martin last pitched on Sept. 16. (Last updated: Feb. 25)
