As we prepare for a jam-packed month of IRONMAN Pro Series racing, we take a quick glance at the rankings, where the pool of contenders for the title are starting to take shape.
Leading the pack is American veteran Matt Hanson, who holds a slender lead over two-time IRONMAN World Champion Patrick Lange, with the pair having raced three events apiece.
In third, Canadian Jackson Laundry currently occupies the last spot in the Top 3, but will see his position challenged over the next month, with races in Boulder, Cairns, Mont-Tremblant and Les Sables d’Olonne.
How do the rankings work?
In this year’s brand new series, the points awarded at each race are determined by the event distance and winner’s finishing time. For the first placed athlete, a middle distance win is worth 2,500 points and a full distance race worth 5,000 points.
Looking at Oceanside, Lionel Sanders earned the maximum 2,500 points, with each athlete behind him receiving a score based on the system that awards points for their individual finish time relative to the event winner.
For every second an athlete finishes behind first place, their tally diminishes by one point. In Oceanside for example, Sam Long received 2,429 points after finishing 71 seconds behind Sanders.
