Welsh Open champion Robert Milkins hit a sparkling break of 140 on his way to a 4-1 win over Allan Taylor in the second round of this year’s event in Llandudno on Tuesday. ‘The Milkman’ is aiming to deliver again when he faces David Gilbert chasing a last-16 spot at Venue Cymru. “It seems like it is coming together,” said Milkins, who defeated Shaun Murphy 9-7 in last year’s final.

Robert Milkins has been known as ‘The Milkman’ for years, but the reigning Welsh Open champion admits there is some credibility to his nickname.

After easing into a last-32 clash with David Gilbert in Llandudno courtesy of a 4-1 win over Allan Taylor on Tuesday morning, world No. 14 Milkins revealed he has always been potting balls with as much regularity as delivering the morning milk.

“I’ve always practised from about 8am onwards. And finish at 1pm or 2pm,” said Milkins after extending his title defence that saw him open and close with breaks of 140 and 83 against world No. 85 Taylor.

“The morning session suits me perfectly. I was up at half past four this morning.

“I’ve always been the same, I go to bed early and wake early. I prefer it that way.

“9:30, 10:00 and 13:00 is great. But when it comes to the evening matches, I just don’t like it at all.”

“I’ve not been at the races in any match this season, I’ve not really been good at all,” said Milkins on the BBC, whose best run of the campaign saw him lose 6-3 to world champion Luca Brecel in the quarter-finals of the invitational Shanghai Masters in September.

“It seems like it is coming together. But for me to get that consistency it is a lot more difficult than it used to be because I am getting older, and I think it is hard.”
