There is no place like home. That same ideology applies to the NFL.
Football squads certainly take advantage when their contest is being played on home turf. From familiar facilities to uninterrupted routines, a home game is much easier to prepare for than hitting the road and getting your mind right for a contest after a day of traveling.
The Lions were no exception in 2023. Detroit went 6-2 at home in the regular season, which was tied for second-best mark in the NFC. In addition, the Lions added two more victories at Ford Field in the postseason, defeating the Rams and Buccaneers to advance to the NFC championship game.
It takes two to tango, and someone has to be the away team. For the first time in the 2024 NFL playoffs, the Lions are hitting the road, traveling out west to San Francisco to play the 49ers for a spot in Super Bowl 58.
Detroit enjoyed success as the away team this year, going 6-3 in road contests in 2023. However, one trend that has stuck out is the difference in performances from quarterback Jared Goff on the road as opposed to home.
Don’t misunderstand — Goff has been pretty dang good when playing away from Motor City. However, his statistics show that the quarterback’s numbers take a bit of a hit when he is visiting an opponent’s stadium.

Here is more to know about Goff’s home-road splits this season and how he performed away from Ford Field.
Jared Goff 2023 road record, stats
The Lions went 6-3 in their nine away games this season, a slight drop from their 6-2 record at Ford Field.
Goff finished completing at least 70 percent of his passes only once on the road in 2023. He had three games where he threw multiple passing touchdowns — the only three games where he finished with a passer rating of at least 100. The rest resulted in either a single score through the air or no passing touchdowns at all.
In total, Goff finished with a passer rating of 89.4 in the nine away games, accumulating 2,335 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Jared Goff 2023 home record, stats
Goff wasn’t bad on the road. The Lions won more often than they lost as the away team, and the quarterback played a critical role in that.
However, there is no place like home, and Goff balled out at Ford Field this year. He threw at least one touchdown in every home game this season, including six contests where he had multiple scores through the air. The QB also hit at least 200 passing yards in every contest in Motor City.

Out of the eight matchups, Goff finished with a passer rating of at least 100 in five of them. The QB put up an average passer rating of 107.9 in those contests, totaling 2,240 passing yards, 18 passing TDs, and six interceptions in the eight home games in Detroit.

Jared Goff career home-road splits
The stats at home compared to the numbers on the road aren’t just limited to 2023.
In his career with the Rams and Lions, Goff has performed better when playing at home — for the most part. It’s not a huge difference, but across all the major statistical categories for quarterbacks, the numbers present a much stronger argument for Goff playing at home as opposed to on the road.
It’s slim, as Goff has still been highly effective as a member of the away club. However, home turf definitely plays to the QB’s favor.
Games Record Comp-Att Comp % Passing Yds Passing TDs INTs Rating Home 59 35-24 1,360-2,049 66.4 15,672 104 37 98.7 Away 58 31-26-1 1,297-2,058 63.0 14,757 81 45 88.5
Jared Goff career indoor-outdoor splits
It’s not just home vs. away splits that are intriguing when looking at Goff’s career. It’s playing indoor vs. outdoor, as well.
Goff has been blessed to play in two indoor stadiums for the majority of his career. When he first joined the Rams in 2016, the team was still playing out of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which was an outdoor field. However, in 2020, the team began playing at SoFi Stadium, an indoor facility.
The QB got just one year playing home games at SoFi Stadium before he was traded to the Lions ahead of the 2021 season. Now, he calls Ford Field home, which is an enclosed stadium.
Based on the indoor-outdoor splits, there is a clear advantage for Goff when playing in an enclosed stadium where he does not have to worry about battling through the elements.
In addition to playing indoors and outdoors, Goff has suited up for nine games in stadiums with a retractable roof, which can be considered indoor, but for the sake of this argument, we are excluding the contests played in these kinds of stadiums considering the venues could have been open or closed.
