Two of the most dangerous fighters in MMA face off in “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” a perfect setting for the expected combat sports violence. Former champions Jiri Prochazka and Alex Pereira fight for the vacant UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 295 on November 11. The fight takes place at Madison Square Garden and will air on ESPN+ PPV.
Prochazka vs. Pereira was initially the co-main event of the show until UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones pulled out of his planned clash with Stipe Miocic due to injury. However the new main event fighters are accustomed to the bright lights. Prochazka headlined a UFC 275 card where he beat Glover Teixeira for light heavyweight gold in 2022’s Fight of the Year. Pereira beat Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title in MSG at UFC 281 and lost to his rival at UFC 287 in Miami.
Prochazka had to vacate the light heavyweight belt due to injury, and it will be 18 months since he last fought.
A former kickboxing champion, Pereira just moved to light heavyweight, beating former champion Jan Blachowicz to become one of the top contenders in the division.
The light heavyweight title has had a wild few years. Jones was the champion, but was stripped at various points due to failed drug tests and an involvement in a hit-and-run incident. He reclaimed the championship, then relinquished it in 2020 to focus on the heavyweight division. Blachowicz, Teixeira, and Prochazka all won the belt, with the latter vacating it, while Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev fought to a draw for the title. After becoming the most recent title holder, Jamahal Hill was forced to relinquish it after tearing his Achilles tendon.
