Josh Hader Trade Rumors: Teams Believe Padres Closer Is ‘Almost Surely Staying’

Despite being included in trade rumors ahead of Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, it seems like San Diego Padres’ closer Josh Hader may be staying put, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman.

Heyman reported that teams that have looked into acquiring Hader have gotten the impression that the 29-year-old All-Star will remain in San Diego as the Padres’ asking price has been very high.

The organization has not spoken on their plans with Hader.

Hader and starter Blake Snell have seemed like a couple of prime candidates to be moved ahead of the deadline with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reporting Thursday that Hader in particular was set to be a hot commodity for team’s around the league.

It’d be strange to see the Padres hold on to both players as they are set to hit free agency in the winter and they’d risk losing them for nothing after a fairly disappointing start to the season.

Coming off a trip to the NLCS in 2022, San Diego are two games under .500 and currently sit in fourth place in the NL West, eight games back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers and five games out of a Wild Card slot.

However, the Padres are known for being unpredictable at this time of year, having acquired both Hader and superstar Juan Soto ahead of last year’s deadline.

And that unpredictability has been present in the reporting of the Hader sweepstakes with ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez reporting on July 24 that both Hader and Snell were expected to remain with the organization.

So, it should be a very entertaining 24 hours for Padres fans everywhere at the very least.

Hader has been one of the bright spots of a mediocre season. He has an incredible 0.90 ERA, the second-lowest mark of any closer in baseball.

He also has 25 saves and was selected to his third-consecutive All-Star game.
