The Judokas from around the world gathered in the arena to engage in the ultimate showdown in order to clinch the ticket to Paris. Along similar lines, Australian Judoka Katharina Haecker also made many heads turn her way through her incredible feat.

As she stood atop the podium, the Australian bagged the first medal for the country and shined brightly on the mats of Baku. Asserting a staunch challenge against her Portuguese counterpart, though she could not take the victory, Haecker made a splash by winning the bronze.

On day 2 of the Baku grand slam, Katharina was up against Barbara Timo for the final block. The reluctant Barbara Timo gave Katharina a tough fight until an Ippon at 4:28 was used by Katharina to finalize her bronze at the Grand Slam. Winning by a golden score point in the third round Katharina concluded the journey for the Australian team by becoming the only Judoka from Australia to clinch a medal at Baku Grand Slam.
Katharina Haecker is the reigning Pan American Oceania Judo champion in the half-middleweight division. The Pan American Oceania champion defended her title and scored another gold. She is also the first Australian to win a Grand Prix medal in Judo.

Andrew Pratley, the director of the Combat Institute of Australia, believes that this additional funding will help Haecker and other athletes to grow and shine at the Paris Olympics next year. With the additional funding, they will be able to send athletes to very important qualification events overseas and will allow them to add more training camps and competition opportunities.

The Judo stage is ready
Now Katharina Haecker is setting her sights on the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her Olympic run in Rio and in Tokyo came to an end without seeing the end with a medal. She lost to Juul Franssen during the Tokyo Olympics and was unable to advance to the quarter-final. Katharina has evolved and grown as a Judoka since her loss at the Tokyo Olympics and has shown vigour and a lot of improvement throughout the 2022 season and now the 2023 Baku Grand Slam.
