Fields, who will be entering his fourth NFL campaign in 2024, will be rocking a new number this season, changing from No. 1 to No. 2 as he suits up in black and gold.
The Steelers traded for Fields just weeks after signing former Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson to a one-year deal. While the veteran Wilson is likely to start over Fields, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t get reps this season.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that teams are expecting the Steelers to give Fields multiple packages as both a runner and a thrower out of the shotgun. One such package could come on the goal line.
While Fields would likely rather be the starter, allowing him a few opportunities every game could help his growth as he looks to eventually be a QB1 again.
The former first-round pick recorded 2,562 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in 13 games a year ago and continued to show off his rushing ability, picking up 657 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Fields’ versatility could do him plenty of favors as he plays behind Wilson this season.
However Pittsburgh plans to use Fields this season, it is looking to improve after years of coming up short. The Steelers haven’t moved past the wild-card round of the playoffs since 2016 when they made it to the AFC Championship. With a pair of talented quarterbacks on the roster, 2024 could be a year for growth.
