The Golden State Warriors have a two-year contract offer on the table for Klay Thompson ahead of his upcoming free agency, according to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon.

During a Thursday appearance on The Hoop Collective, MacMahon revealed that “we’ve heard it’s a two-year offer” (30:25 mark). He added that the duration of the deal could mean more to Thompson than the price, explaining that “it’s as much about years as dollars in some of these cases.”

Monte Poole of NBC Sports previously reported Monday that the veteran is searching for a contract that lasts “at least three years.”

Thompson is eligible to re-sign with the Warriors prior to his unrestricted free agency on June 30 due to a new league rule that allows teams to negotiate with their own free agents, although it appears that the two sides still have some hurdles to overcome in negotiations.

On May 30, Anthony Slater of The Athletic reported that there was “no notable movement” between Thompson and the Warriors regarding a potential new contract.

The 13-year veteran took a step back on both ends of the court during his 2023-24 campaign, as his scoring average of 17.9 points per game represented the lowest mark since his 2012-13 season. He also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 43.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from behind the arc.

Thompson also bounced back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench as the Warriors failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2021 despite finishing the regular season with a 46-36 record.

While he can still return to the organization once he’s allowed to negotiate with other teams in free agency, an opposing front office may offer him a three-year contract that he’s reportedly searching for. According to Slater and Shams Charania of The Athletic, there is “mutual interest” between Thompson and the Orlando Magic.

If he’s unable to find common ground on the length of a potential contract with the Warriors, he may wind up on another roster at the beginning of the 2024-25 season.
