Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray is reportedly the Los Angeles Lakers’ “top priority” ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline.
Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported talks have stalled between the Lakers and Hawks but the two sides plan to reconvene ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline.
Atlanta has been shopping Murray for several weeks as the team tries to retool its roster amid a disappointing 19-27 start. The Lakers have likewise underwhelmed, sitting at 24-23 after being a Western Conference finalist a year ago, but it seems the two sides have different ideas on how to move forward.
The Hawks are a clear seller, with Murray being their most attractive trade chip. The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor reported Atlanta is seeking at least two first-round picks in any trade for Murray, which presents a problem for the Lakers given their lack of available assets. Due to the Stepien Rule, the Lakers’ 2029 first-round pick is the only one currently available in trades. They could offer pick swaps and second-round picks, but their maneuverability with their own selections is nonexistent.
Murray is a near-perfect fit for this Lakers roster, a rock-solid guard in nearly every facet of the game. He’s taken a backseat in primary ball-handling duties playing next to Trae Young but is two years removed from averaging 9.2 assists per game. The 27-year-old is also a stellar defender on the perimeter and is currently shooting 38.8 percent from three-point range.
The Lakers could slot Murray in as a true third star next to LeBron James and Anthony Davis and won’t have to worry about any fit issues. Murray is the rare NBA player who can find a fit in any system and has shown a willingness to adapt.
What’s more, his contract is more than manageable. His four-year, $114.1 million extension does not kick in until next season and pays him significantly less than what he would land on the open market.
It’s a surprise that the Lakers are even in a position to land Murray given their lack of assets.
