League One Exeter stun Luton as Ipswich defeat Wolves
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

There were two huge upsets in the League Cup on Tuesday night with Premier League clubs Luton Town and Wolves being knocked out by lower league opposition.

Gary O’Neil’s Wolves succumbed to a 3-2 defeat by Championship side Ipswich Town, despite having taken the lead early on in the match through Hwang Hee-chan, with Jake Taylor producing a spectacular 35-yard strike to secure the winner.

Sasa Kalajdzic broke free on the far side of the pitch and picked out Hwang darting into the penalty area, before sliding the ball over to him, with the South Korean forward making no mistake putting his side in front.

Wolves doubled their lead through Toti Gomes not long after, who pounced on a loose ball from a corner to put Wolves in the driving seat.

But their lead wouldn’t last long though as 19-year-old Omari Hutchinson beat goalkeeper Dan Bentley at the near post, before Freddie Ladapo got the equaliser, hitting home on the edge of the penalty area just before half-time.

Taylor’s strike would earn his side the victory, compounding further woes for O’Neil’s side who have endured a difficult start to the new season, failing to win in all of their four previous outings across all competitions.

Ipswich progress to the League Cup fourth round for the first time since the 2010-11 campaign and, in contrast to Wolves, have enjoyed a brilliant start to the new season, winning all four of their previous matches in the Championship shooting them to second in the table, level on points with leaders Leicester.

Exeter put Luton to the sword

League One side Exeter City struck late against Luton to earn a 1-0 win, with Demetri Mitchell scoring the winner in the 83rd minute of the game before being sent off for a second yellow card.

Luton were the brighter side in the first 45 minutes but could not break down the hosts, who coped with the opposition’s advances well, before showing more attacking threat after the break.

Exeter broke the deadlock with seven minutes remaining, Mitchell connecting with Yanic Wildschut’s cross to tap in at the far post.

Luton boss, Rob Edwards, expressed his disappointment after the match, telling BBC: “I thought there were elements of the performance that were OK, but we certainly have got to find the quality, desire, devilment to break teams down.

“Tonight we had a lot of the ball, they defended with six and gave no space around the box and credit to them for doing that well. We’ve got to be better in that final third, no excuses at all, so it’s disappointing.”

Burnley hit four against Salford

League Two’s Salford City had beaten Championship outfits Preston and Leeds in the previous two rounds but had their cup run drawn to a close, losing 4-0 to Burnley.

It was the first time that Salford had faced a Premier League opponent in their history but it was to end in despair as they suffered their sixth defeat on the bounce in all competitions.

Vincent Kompany’s side got off to a fast start scoring three goals within 27 minutes of the match, with Sander Berge heading before Jacob Bruun Larson chipped the ball past Alex Cairns in goal.

Dara O’Shea would complete a first half trio, before Wilson Odobert compounded Salford’s woes with a fourth goal in the 81st minute to seal the Clarets’ place in the next round.
