Driving without some music blasting from the speakers sounds boring, right? Well, now, Mercedes-AMG has elevated this experience of listening to in-car audio with an amazing innovation. As a Mercedes racer, Lewis Hamilton tried the car manufacturer’s new program called the MBUX Sound Drive which crafts music customized to the driving style of every car owner. At the Consumer and Electronics Show (CES) earlier this year, Mercedes-AMG made an announcement about the MBUX Sound Drive. It is a collaboration between the German automobile conglomerate and the popular rapper and singer-songwriter will. i. am.
The track uses some ground-breaking technology to make music that synchronizes with the driving dynamics. This highlighted how every car with the MBUX Sound Drive is essentially a giant musical instrument. While Mercedes-AMG has not released the program publicly as of yet, the MBUX Sound Drive technology can offer an immersive experience to all the drivers, essentially re-shaping how they view in-car audio right now. To demonstrate this, Lewis Hamilton showed off his skills as a composer in Mercedes‘ latest YouTube video.

As the F1 circus is not returning until the Spanish GP happens next week, Lewis Hamilton has some free time on his hands right now. And he has decided to use it to try out Mercedes’ latest music-composing technology. He took the Mercedes-AMG EQE 53 4MATIC+ out for a drive and “composed” a song that matched his driving style. As Lewis Hamilton’s car swerved on the closed race track, the intelligent technology picked up the driving dynamics through its sensors and a song blasted out for the seven-time World Champion.

At the start of the video, Lewis Hamilton asked the Mercedes-AMG representative to explain how the Sound Drive system worked. But by the end of it, he was obviously quite impressed. Happy with the tunes, he kept his eyes on the track as he said, “Pretty cool beat.” The Mercedes racer then finished his round with the $100,000 sedan and ended his demonstration of the yet-to-release Sound Drive technology.

Mercedes-AMG will not drop Sound Drive anytime soon
Mercedes-AMG teased the news about their Sound Drive technology in January 2024. As per their comments on Lewis Hamilton’s YouTube video, the system will be incorporated into the Mercedes-AMG vehicles equipped with the second-generation MBUX system from mid-2024. The existing Mercedes customers can also get their hands on it by updating their MBUX Software.

Coming to how the Mercedes-AMG Sound Drive technology works, it actually creates music from the drive of a car using sensors. The inputs are then plotted on a DAW (digital audio workstation) to make the notes. This is where the collaboration will. i. am. comes into play. The American star has recorded several notes to reflect the driving style. If the sensors pick up a fast drive, the music will have a high tempo, and if they sense a slow, smooth drive, the track will reflect it as well.
This is the first time any car manufacturer is going to put so much innovation into the in-car audio facility. While the design sounds like something straight out of a Black Mirror episode, would you like to fit something like this into your car? Let us know in the comments below.
