The sound of their anthem, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, as it reverberates around Anfield is one of the most enduring and iconic moments in world football. Liverpool Football Club – also known as The Reds – was founded in 1892 and it has enjoyed a storied and incredible ride since then. As one of the most successful clubs in England, Liverpool have won 19 League titles, seven FA Cups, eight League Cups (more than any other team) and 15 FA Community Shields. Additionally, they have won six European Cups (the most by any English team), three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups and the FIFA Club World Championship.
After several years without silverware, Liverpool returned to capture the Premier League title in the 2019/20 season under the management of charismatic German Jurgen Klopp. Given their storied history, Liverpool have several iconic managers who have led them over the years. These include Rafael Benítez, under whose guidance The Reds famously won the Champions League in 2005, Kenny Dalglish, Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and their longest-serving gaffer Tom Watson who steered the club from 1896 to 1915.
Given the scale of their success over the years, it is not surprising that the list of great Liverpool players is long. Some of the biggest stars associated with the club down the years include Steven Gerrard, Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Ian Rush, Ray Clemence, Kevin Keegan, Graeme Souness and in more recent times, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.
Despite their legendary success, it would be remiss not to mention some of the darker episodes that will sadly always be associated with the club. These are the notorious stadium disasters at Heysel in 1985 and 1989’s Hillsborough disaster which resulted in the death of 96 people.
