Liverpool vs Wolves: Preview, predictions and lineups

An emotional Anfield will bear witness to Jurgen Klopp’s final game in charge of Liverpool this Sunday as the Reds host Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While Liverpool are now guaranteed to finish third following an underwhelming end to the campaign, there will be a party atmosphere inside Anfield as supporters offer Klopp his final farewell. The result will ultimately be immaterial, but sending the 56-year-old off with a victory would be welcomed with open arms by the club’s fans.

Liverpool’s 3-3 draw with Aston Villa left a lot to be desired given that the Reds had a two-goal cushion up until the 85th minute, but they will be aiming to take advantage of a Wolves side short on confidence. The Old Gold have won just two games since the beginning of March and have now dropped to 13th in the table.

The reverse fixture finished in Liverpool’s favour back in September. Klopp’s men came from a goal behind to win 3-1 thanks to a late Andy Robertson effort and Hugo Bueno own goal.

Here is 90min’s guide to Liverpool vs Wolves on the final day of the season.

Klopp has almost his entire squad available to him for the visit of Wolves, apart from long-term absentees Joel Matip and Thiago – both of whom will also be bidding farewell to Anfield on Sunday.

Diogo Jota may also be unavailable against his former side after injuring himself in the 3-1 victory over Fulham on April 21, but he could return to the bench at the very least this weekend. Andy Robertson missed the trip to Villa Park with a minor issue but has now returned to training and should be fit.

Liverpool predicted lineup vs Wolves

Liverpool predicted lineup (4-3-3): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Quansah, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Endo, Mac Allister; Salah, Gakpo, Diaz.

Wolves could be without the influential Pedro Neto for the trip to Merseyside, with the Portuguese having been absent for over two months with a hamstring problem. While he is closing in on a return to fitness, he may not be risked for a meaningless end-of-season match given his injury history.

Craig Dawson is also unavailable in defence after undergoing surgery in April and youngster Leon Chiwome is missing with an ankle injury.

Wolves predicted lineup vs Liverpool

Wolves predicted lineup (3-5-2): Bentley; Semedo, Kilman, Toti; Doherty, J. Gomes, M. Lemina, Bellegarde, Ait-Nouri; Hwang, Cunha.

Both Liverpool and Wolves have shown their fallibility in recent weeks, especially defensively, making this clash tough to predict. When you add into the equation that this match-up is a dead rubber, it makes it difficult to anticipate which version of these teams we will witness.

However, Liverpool’s superior quality and the energy of an Anfield rocking in the name of Klopp should get the Reds over the line, although their wait of over two months for a league clean sheet may go on.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Wolves
