Man City vs Man United live score, result, updates, highlights, lineups from Manchester derby in the Premier League

ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Phil Foden scored a magnificent second-half double to turn the Manchester derby on its head and give City a crucial 3-1 win over United.

Pep Guardiola’s are back to within a point of Liverpool in an enthralling Premier League title race ahead pf their trip to Anfield next week but they were caught cold by an electrifying 25-yard strike from Rashford in the eighth minute.

City dominated the first half for long periods but had nothing to show for it as Erling Haaland produced an implausible horror miss with goal at his mercy.

Foden was also denied one-against-one by the impressive Andre Onana but he matched Rashford’s brilliance by rifling into the top corner before the hour.

Guardiola sent on Julian Alvarez for the ineffective Jeremy Doku, knowing three points were a non-negotiable requirement with Liverpool and Arsenal in relentless form, and the Argentina international exchanged passes with Foden in the 80th minute for the hometown hero to produce an unerring finish.

An allocation of eight minutes of stoppage time brought boos from the Etihad Stadium crowd but Haaland atoned for his earlier woes when United’s playing out from the back failed them once more and he converted Rodri’s pass.

Rashford’s stunner and shockers sum up his season

There have been times over the past few months when Manchester United fans have wondered aloud whether it’s worth bothering with Marcus Rashford. In the eighth minute, their team having barely left their own third, they had their answer. Rashford’s strike was simply exhilarating, the sort of derby goal that every Manchester boy dreams of scoring.

He scored one of those on this ground almost eight years ago as a fearless teenager, making a mockery of the veteran Martin Demichelis before slotting home. Those days when everything seems possible are a fleeting moment for all players and a lot of water has since passed under the bridge for Rashford, both good and bad.

An unflattering reading of today’s performance would be that if the majestic goal was a glimpse of what Rashford might have become, what followed offered the truer reflection of what he is. He botched a golden first-half chance at the far post, having also allowed Kyle Walker to chase back and tackle him authoritatively when a City slip let United through on goal. Afterwards, Erik ten Hag acknowledged Rashford had “three or four moments where he could have scored. He scored the first one and should have scored more.”

Walker left Rashford on the turf in a challenge that began the move leading to Foden’s equaliser. He complained to the officials but the replay revealed a soft piece of play. As United tried to hang on to 1-1, Ten Hag sent on Antony to do some hard running for a team sustaining themselves on less than 30% of the ball. The United boss cited an injury that his star attacker had carried into the game, yet it was another moment when the mirage of Rashford that came to life earlier in the afternoon was no longer enough.

What is Phil Foden’s best position?

This debate will run and run into Euro 2024 and beyond. There was an irony in Alvarez astutely laying on Foden’s game-breaking goal. For large chunks of the season, the Argentina youngster has played in the attacking midfield positions Foden loves, with the homegrown City star a victim of his own versatility as injuries have hit City’s options out wide.

Foden was in the inside left position to dart onto Alvarez’s pass and score. However, he came in from the right wing to score one of the great Etihad Stadium goals earlier in the half. One conclusion is that Phil Foden’s best position is on a football pitch, such is his rare talent. And intuitive, instinctive gem who has all of the Guardiola football factory programming wired between his ears.

England manager Gareth Southgate might resist the urge for a dream midfield three of Foden, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, perhaps wanting a little more out-of-possession insurance alongside the latter two.

If so, there might be a choice to make between Rashford and Foden on the left wing. Right now it’s not even a conversation. It’s tantalising to wonder how Rashford’s talent might have bloomed in the sort of footballing environment Foden has enjoyed throughout his breakthrough years. But in this derby illuminated for two shooting Mancunian stars, there is only one heading for the stratosphere.

When Guardiola was asked afterwards about where his matchwinner stood among the Premier League’s best performers, his answer was emphatic. “He is right now this season, he is the best. Today, when he got the ball near the box, the crowd had a feeling that something was going to happen.”

Man City vs Man United live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime: A thoroughly deserved victory for City, whose afternoon was complicated by Marcus Rashford’s incredible opening goal. The United forward’s missed opportunities stand as the big “what if” for Erik ten Hag, but his team were roundly outplayed in the end. Phil Foden followed up last season’s hat-trick in this fixture with a far more important brace and Erling Haaland scored to take some of the heat off his runaway miss-of-the-season candidate. It’s Liverpool on 63 points, City on 62 and Liverpool vs. City at Anfield in seven days’ time. Go and fetch the popcorn.

90th minute+6: Casemiro clumps into Foden. There’s a bit of afters from players on both sides after that. Now Foden departs to a standing ovation. The hero of the hour, the City fan, the former City ballboy. Now the derby day matchwinner.

90th minute+5: City are popping around passes to a soundtrack of “Oles”. There appears to have been some sort of fire drill in the away end.

90th minute+1: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Erling Haaland!!!!

Haaland rights his earlier wrong to settle matters. Onana plays it to Casemiro, whose pass to Amrabat isn’t the best in the world. Amrabat makes it look like the worst pass of all time and gets in an almighty tangle. Rodri slots a pass to Haaland and… if you can say this after what happened before… he’s not missing that in a month of Sundays.

90th minute+1: De Bruyne almost brings the house down with a long-ranger that flies wide.

90th minute: Eight minutes of stoppage time. News that is roundly booed.

89th minute: Garnacho has a chance to stretch his legs on the break but he’s hounded down by Ake, who has been absolutely excellent.

85th minute: It remains all City. They have no intention of sitting back and want to put this to bed.

80th minute: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Phil Foden!!!!

The City boy might well have won the derby for them! Foden drops into midfield, in one of those pockets where he’s so dangerous. Alvarez spots the one-two and his team-mate allows a low shot across Onana and in.

78th minute: Garnacho is down in the area and wants a penalty, but it looks like Ederson got all of the ball there. Yep, VAR replay confirms an excellent, if robust, challenge from the City keeper. A handy reminder of United’s threat, nevertheless, which we haven’t seen much in this half.

74th minute: Antony coming on for Rashford, who has faded since his implausibly explosive start. And United need fresh legs out of possession.

72nd minute: Careless giveaway from Stones but United just smack the ball back to Ederson. They’ve had 28% of possession in a very intense game. These closing stages could be hard.

71st minute: Walker absolutely welts one from range. It’s straight at Onana, which is handy for the United keeper.

70th minute: Not De Bruyne’s best effort, in truth, The wall easily does it’s job.

68th minute: Haaland bustles towards the United box. Varane shoves him over and City have a free-kick on the edge of the D. De Bruyne might just like the look of this. Kambwala replacing Evans for United.

66th minute: Rashford down the left. He looks for Fernandes, who gets his feet wrong and City are able to bundle clear.

65th minute: Onana is down for some treatment. He also enjoys and exchange of views with the City fans behind the goal.

60th minute: The Etihad is rocking now. Stones tries a shot from 30 yards. Maybe calm down a bit. Alvarez comes on for Doku.

56th minute: GOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!!! Phil Foden!!!!

Another screamer from a Manchester lad in the derby. Foden sees Rashford, raises him and raises the roof at the Etihad. The England start cut in onto his left foot and rifled an unstoppable 25-yarder beyond Onana.

55th minute: Evans backheels the ball to stop Walker taking a quick throw. He then hurls it anyway and United break. Walker back to stop Rashford, who wants a foul. He might have had a point.

50th minute: Haaland with some good hold-up play inside the area. Here’s Doku. Deflected shot and another very nice piece of work from Onana.

47th minute: Oscar Bobb and Julian Alvarez go to warm up. It doesn’t look like Guardiola will spend too much time wondering if the scoreline stays the same.

46th minute: Here we go again. Stones lands awkwardly after an aerial challenge with McTominay. He’s had a dreadful time with injuries but it looks like he’ll be okay.

Halftime: City were 4-0 up at halftime in this fixture last season. On the balance of play, that could have happened again. But it didn’t because Marcus Rashford happened, clattering home one of the goals of the season. Guardiola’s men attacked in waves but have nothing to show for it apart from Erling Haaland’s miss of the season. A big 45 minutes for bragging rights and the title race coming up.

45th minute+3: Varane clears behind, vital stuff again. Closer to his own net than Haaland’s try just then. City keep going. Walker has a drive deflected over. De Bruyne’s in-swinger is caught by Onana.

45th minute: ERLING HAALAND!?!?!?!? HOW?!?!?!?! Rodri chips to the far post, Foden nods back across goal and the Premier League’s top scorer volleys over an empty net from three yards. Astonishing.

— NBC Sports Soccer (@NBCSportsSoccer) March 3, 2024

44th minute: Incredible clearance by Varane with Haaland lurking. Silva got the final ball right this time. Mainoo then makes a vital block on Foden’s follow-up, which was travelling.

42nd minute: More rumbling City possession. But they seem anxious with it. Varane gets a vital touch to take the ball away from Doku. De Bruyne snatches at one on the edge of the area, getting his shot closer to the second tier than the net.

37th minute: De Bruyne (yes, he’s starting another entry) to Foden, nice first touch this time and he pings a shot. United body in the way.

35th minute: De Bruyne lines up the shot, City’s 12th of the half, and drags tamely wide. Guardiola will be buoyed by the amount of joy his team are getting around the United penalty area but they’ve been terribly imprecise with a lot of it.

33rd minute: De Bruyne pings one of those De Bruyne crosses. Varane does well to clear, Rodri meets it first time and Onana shovels behind. City have had so many corners they seem to have run out of ideas what to do with them.

32nd minute: Walker and Stones with a couple of lovely line-breaking passes. Doku shoots into Dalot, the ball spins into the air and Haaland nods over. A half chance at best.

30th minute: Doku, who was just unceremoniously dumped over by Casemiro, exchanges passes with Silva but can only slice well wide.

28th minute: Doku is crowded out as United again get away with giving the ball away in their own third. They surely cannot keep getting away with it.

25th minute: Bernardo Silva’s cross strikes Dalot on his tucked in elbow. Silva doesn’t appeal bit this is checked by VAR. No penalty. City’s attacking wave continues. Rodri’s shot is deflected behind for another corner. This whole game has felt like injury time.

23rd minute: Onana wallops the ball straight back to City, who can’t make the most of it. Now Evans strides forward. Really. Rashford should score at the back post but misses his kick. This is wildly frantic.

19th minute: Big chance for Foden! De Bruyne plays the England man through. He can never quite get the ball out of his feet through, Varane marshalls him excellently and Onana makes the save.

17th minute: Huge chance for United.. or it should have been. Fernandes gets the better of Stones on halfway and Rashford has a whole half to tear into. Guardiola is on his haunches. But back comes Walker ferociously to tackle his England team-mate.

16th minute: Doku finds the underlapping Silva, who cuts back to De Bruyne. The Belgium star can’t get a bouncing ball under control and skews wide left-footed. United’ playing out is a fiasco again, with Evans the culprit this time, but they don’t pay too steep a price.

14th minute: There’s a frantic feel now. City bundle the ball to Foden inside the box. He shoots right footed and Onana saves with his legs. The United goalkeeper unfussily claims the resulting corner.

13th minute: United looking to make the most of their advantage and Ederson gets up to a corner under his crossbar under pressure. City dart up the other end and have  a corner of their own. Ooofff, that’s a dicey clearance from Fernandes. Almost into his own net.

8th minute: GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Marcus Rashford!!!!!

Oh my good grief! Pick that one out! Fernandes manages to hold up an attack from Onana’s long ball. He lays it back to Rashford who unleashes hell form 25 yards. In off the crossbar, no chance for Ederson. Script torn up!

6th minute: Onana’s short goal kick is cut out by Silva. Finally United get forward, Garnacho gets to stretch his legs and Ederson pouches a cross that Ake took the pace off.

5th minute: Doku sizes up Dalot and tries to catch Onana out at his near post. It ripples the top of the netting.

4th minute: We’re playing on. Casemiro arguably a lucky chap. United could do with getting hold of the ball and/or getting out of their own half at some point.

3rd minute: I think Doku just booked the ball into Fernandes’ errrmmm groin area. It bounces well for City. Stones bursts into the box and wants a penalty. That’ll be checked. Casemiro into the back of him.

2nd minute: De Bruyne takes it to Silva on the edge of the box. Return pass, then he finds Foden, whose shot from the edge is deflected over. United get the second corner away.

1st minute: City kickoff. Silva all the way back to Edersin and they get in their passing. Haaland with some nice hold-up play. Doku wins a corner off Dalot.

3 mins before kickoff: Here are the teams into the late winter sunshine. Blue Moon ringing around the Etihad now. We’re good to go.

20 mins before kickoff: So, a reminder of the situation at the top of the Premier League table. City are aiming to win and trim Liverpool’s advantage at the top of the table to a solitary point ahead of their trip to Anfield next weekend. Champions League qualification is a long shot for United. After wins for Aston Villa and Tottenham yesterday, they can’t really afford to lose much more ground.

40 mins before kickoff: As discussed, City are heavy favourites going into this one and those confirmed lineups do nothing to shake that perception. The Etihad Stadium DJ playing 2000 dance smash Toca’s Miracle (with it’s “I need a miracle”) refrain feels a little bit mischievous. Banger though.

55 mins before kickoff: Here’s the City team. Jeremy Doku is the beneficiary from Jack Grealish’s groin injury and starts on the left wing. Manuel Akanji drops to the bench to accommodate Ruben Dias in the starting back four. Josko Gvardiol returns among the substitutes.

1 hour before kickoff: The teams are in. Rasmus Hojlund and Lisandro Martinez each arrived with the United team in tracksuits to briefly cause some brouhaha. Turns out they’re both still not fit and are here to support their team-mates and no more. Jonny Evans and Kobbie Mainoo come in for Sofyan Amrabat and Antony.

1hr 15 mins before kickoff: The City team arrived to a rapturous reception from the home fans a short while ago. Jack Grealish is the only notable absentee and we knew that was going to be the case already as the England international nurses his latest groin injury. Confirmed team news will be with us shortly.

1 hr 50 mins before kickoff: City have won four of the past five editions of this fixture, including last season’s FA Cup final, and have racked up the goals in the past two on home turf, winning the Etihad Stadium derbies in 2022 4-1 and 6-3. United have only lost once in 2024, but last weekend’s tragicomic 2-1 loss to Fulham at Old Trafford felt particularly damaging and Erik ten Hag is without Harry Maguire, Rasmus Hojlund and other key personnel.

City are favourites here, no doubt, especially after Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne made merry at Luton in the FA Cup, but there is the wider context of a three-pronged title race entering its final stretch. Events like Liverpool’s 99th minute winner at Nottingham Forest on Saturday can sometimes do funny things to rival teams. Pep Guardiola’s side have typically been unflustered by such fluctuations but no team is infallible before we even consider the wildcard tension of derby day.
