The iconic No.7 jersey has stayed vacant since Ronaldo’s departure last winter.
Cristiano Ronaldo ended his second spell at Manchester United after an explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
The move left United fans stunned, giving the club no time to find a successor to his iconic No.7 jersey. The likes of George Best, Bryan Robson, Erik Cantona, and David Beckham had worn the shirt before Ronaldo claimed it in his debut in 2003.
Since Ronaldo’s departure, a number of candidates have emerged to become United’s new No.7.
Most observers saw Jadon Sancho as the favourite to take the shirt after his move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. However, the English star’s unconvincing displays have seen him struggle for playing time under Erik ten Hag.
Man United fans have now received a hint that Alejandro Garnacho will wear the iconic jersey have season.
On Friday, the club sent out a mobile push notification to their fan base alongside the caption: “If you’re a true fan of Alejandro, then you’ll score at least seven out of 10 [wink emoji].”
Garnacho spent a fantastic breakthrough campaign under Erik ten Hag last season. The Argentine forward made 19 Premier League appearances, scoring three goals and two goals.
Taking on the No.7 jersey would be a huge moment for Garnacho, who considers Ronaldo as his footballing idol. The decision would also mean that Ten Hag is planning for the 18-year-old to become a key part of United’s attacking line next season.
