Erik ten Hag’s side rallied late on against Bayern Munich scoring a trio of second-half goals but it was not enough to secure the win, with Manchester United succumbing to a 4-3 defeat. Rio Ferdinand said that United “have got to come away with something” after scoring three at the Allianz Arena before insisting that the Red Devils were “flattered” by the scoreline.
‘It’s a very bad mistake’ – Rio and Scholes look at Onana’s howler against Bayern
Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Manchester United have got to come away with something after scoring three goals at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
A mistake from Andre Onana in goal saw Erik ten Hag’s side concede the opener after 28 minutes, Leroy Sane driving the ball at the Cameroonian shot stopper who couldn’t control the ball which trickled behind him into the back of the net.
Serge Gnabry struck just four minutes after to double the home side’s lead, with Jamal Musiala flying down the left flank to supply the German forward for the goal.
And despite a penalty from Harry Kane, Ten Hag’s side rallied in the second half with Rasmus Hojlund scoring his debut goal for the club before Casemiro, who has been criticised for his performances of late, scored a brace for the club in the dying embers of the match.

Mathys Tel wrapped up the scoring for Bayern in the 92nd minute to secure the win for the Bavarian giants, but Rio Ferdinand admitted United should have come away with something having scored three goals against Die Roten at home.
The ex-United defender said on TNT Sports: “I think at the end of the game they showed a bit of spirit, but up until that point, they’re not making it hard enough for opposition to score goals.
Goals are going in too easily, chances are being given up too easily and they’re making it hard for themselves.
“You come to places like here you’ve got to concentrate, you’ve got to be hard to play against and be hard to get through and they’re not doing that at the moment.
“And when they were on top and had moments in the game they were not being clinical enough.
“They scored three goals today. You score three goals at the Allianz Arena, you’ve got to come away with something.’
It compounds their difficult start to the Premier League campaign that has seen the Red Devils lose three of their opening five matches, having now also conceded 12 goals in their last four outings in all competitions.
‘That’s exactly what he needed’ – Højlund scores first United goal to halve Bayern deficit
Paul Scholes added: “Look when you look at the game as a whole I thought United did well in the first half, still conceded two goals and lacked a lot of concentration. I think the three goals flatter Manchester United really, I thought they were outclassed in the second half.
“Like you said Rio, there is experience in the team but I don’t think it’s being used. In Europe especially, concentration is so important. Once you concede one goal it can all of a sudden turn into two and then three.
“There’s no one who will who will turn around and say, ‘Casemiro, Eriksen stay in here, you’re not going anywhere’. Let’s just calm the game down for five or ten minutes and you still have a chance. You can see they’re capable of scoring goals but again lapses in concentration cost them dearly.”
