United draw up shortlist for new defender
Manchester United are aiming to bring in a new centre-back, according to the Mirror, as they prepare to replace Harry Maguire.
“Manchester United have opened up talks with Ligue 1 star Jean-Clair Todibo after drawing up a four-man shortlist to replace Harry Maguire.” the paper states.
“After months of speculation over his future, Maguire’s time at Old Trafford appeared up this summer after manager Erik ten Hag opted to strip him of the club captaincy. But initially, the England defender vowed to stay and fight for his place, with the club turning down a £20m offer from West Ham.
“United are now pursuing a host of replacements to fill the void. As well as Todibo, Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, Bayern Munich’s Benjamin Pavard, and Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi are all on United’s radar.
“And the club are also reportedly considering a one-year deal for Jonny Evans. After initially being permitted to come back and train at Carrington this summer after his contract expired at Leicester, Evans was handed a temporary deal to play in pre-season after impressing Ten Hag.”
Maguire set for West Ham
The Guardian reports on the details that will see Harry Maguire leave Old Trafford in order to move to West Ham ahead of the forthcoming season, after losing the captaincy under Erik ten Hag.
“West Ham have an agreement in principle on a fee of £30m for Maguire and are due to discuss personal terms with the defender,” the paper reports.
“The 30-year-old has fallen out of favour under Erik ten Hag, who has stripped of him of the captaincy, and needs to move to try to protect his England place.
“One potential stumbling block for West Ham is that Maguire, whose deal runs until 2025, received a considerable salary increase as a result of United qualifying for the Champions League. West Ham have been looking for a way to ensure they and United can cover any potential shortfall in Maguire’s wages.”
Chelsea defender Maatsen in demand
Two clubs are interested in signing Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, with Burnley keen on bringing back the player who was on loan with them last season when they won the Championship.
The paper states: “Chelsea starlet Ian Maatsen is being chased by two Premier League sides following his impressive performances on the club’s pre-season tour.
“The 21-year-old is on the wish lists of both West Ham and Burnley.
“Maatsen spent last season on loan at Burnley in the Championship and boss Vincent Kompany is said to be keen on borrowing him again this term.
“West Ham are also reportedly considering a loan option for the left-back as a further addition to [the] squad after the imminent signings of Harry Maguire and James Ward-Prowse.”
Raya set for Arsenal switch
The Mail reports that Brentford goalkeeper David Raya will move to Arsenal on loan, with the option of a permanent deal to be completed.
The Spaniard will extend his deal with Brentford so that he does not leave for nothing when the loan is up.
The paper explains: “Raya has one year remaining on his contract at the Gtech Community Stadium, which will be extended for a further 12 months to facilitate the deal.
“Despite Aaron Ramsdale’s stellar performances between the sticks, it is thought that Mikel Arteta’s side are keen for the England international to have sterner competition.
“The deal is expected to see Raya move to the Emirates for an initial £3million loan fee with the option of making the switch permanent next summer for an extra £27m.”
