Manchester United’s latest embarrassment dished out by food hygiene authorities after ‘raw chicken’ incident at Old Trafford

Manchester United have been served their latest embarrassment by a surprise source – the Food Standards Agency.

The Premier League giants have been given a one out of five hygiene rating after an episode which reportedly saw punters served ‘raw chicken’ at Old Trafford.

Things have not been going well for Man United this season, with Erik ten Hag’s side sitting seventh in the table after the club’s worst start to a season in 60 years, and marooned six points outside the top-four.

But as bad as things are on the pitch for the Red Devils, it appears things are even worse off it.

First, there’s the ownership situation which hasn’t gone the way fans expected it to after over a year of takeover negotiations, which have resulted in not a takeover at all, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe buying a minority share.

And then there were the recent claims of a food poisoning incident within Old Trafford, as the Theatre of Dreams had a kitchen nightmare where punters at a non-matchday event were reportedly served undercooked chicken.

It led to United’s in-house catering operation having an inspection from the Food Standards Agency [FSA], which then resulted in a 1 / 5 rating

The survey noted that cleanliness of the kitchens at Old Trafford were ‘good’ but their system to make sure food going out to customers is edible and safe to eat needs ‘major improvement’.

The Red Devils admitted ‘a small amount of undercooked meat was inadvertently served’ at Old Trafford.

And the club has said they are now planning to conduct an independent food audit to identify any further areas of improvement.

A statement from Manchester United on the FSA website reads: “Following the isolated incident in one of our kitchens, MUFC quickly took action to ensure immediate failures were addressed.

“Kitchen staff were rebriefed on MUFC’s food safety requirements, kitchen procedures were reviewed and an external audit of all kitchens was commissioned.

“Going forwards we have increased the frequency of our audit regime to provide assurance to our valued fans and customers.

“MUFC serves thousands of meals each month and has an impeccable track record which led to our 5 star food hygiene rating.

“Following a thorough investigation, it was confirmed a small amount of undercooked meat was inadvertently served during a non match day event.

“This was an isolated issue and the immediate failures were quickly addressed.

“MUFC has taken this incident very seriously and wants to reassure our valued fans and customers that we maintain the highest culinary standards.

“The club is proud of the high standards and the five-star food hygiene record which had been awarded to us for the past eight years.

“Everyone at the club is determined to regain our five-star food hygiene status as quickly as possible.”
