Over the past few weeks, the Marlins have popped up in countless trade rumors. In a welcome change for the organization and its fans, Miami is in buy mode for the first time in seven years.
Despite dropping seven of its past 10 games, the ballclub entered Sunday a half-game back in the National League Wild Card standings. Complicating matters, however, are the streaking Cubs and Padres, who are within striking distance of a playoff spot and perhaps unlikely to sell leading up to Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline.
“You see a few falling,” Ng said Friday. “I think there’s a lot of adapting to the prices in the market right now. Like I said, I’ve been saying for a few weeks now, it’s definitely a seller’s market. I think if there’s something that you see that you like, you have to step up, which is something I think we did. It’s really like I said: The markets are continuing to evolve, because it is such a seller’s market, and it’s seeing how different people react to these first handful of deals that have happened.”
There is still work to do. Will the Marlins add a starting pitcher? Perhaps a bat or two? One thing is for certain: Ng will balance the present with the future well-being of the organization.
“I think these couple of moves were really good moves,” Ng said. “Are we content? I’m not sure we’re ever content, but again, during this time, it’s easy to get emotional, and I know the club hasn’t done well the last couple of weeks. But like I said in another interview, it’s not a good time to get emotional. It’s the worst time, in fact, and you just have to really be steady and convicted in how you want to approach this and stick to your guns.”
