Max Verstappen’s lack of enthusiasm for the Las Vegas Grand Prix was on show once again as he compared it to the National League.

‘Sin City’ is hosting Formula 1 this weekend for the first time since 1982 when it staged the Caesars Palace Grand Prix.

It’s the third race to be held in the United States following visits to Miami and Austin, and the penultimate track of the 2023 calendar.

Despite Las Vegas’ glitz and glamour, an unexcited Verstappen recently said they’re there ‘more for the show than the racing itself.’

And the three-time world champion hasn’t stopped there though as he compared this weekend’s race to the fifth tier of English football.

Speaking after Saturday’s qualifying session, he said “I think Monaco is like the Champions League, this is National League.”

The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most lavish races in the calendar and a huge favourite amongst fans.

Las Vegas’ track also features tight corners but it’s clear that the Red Bull Racing star is looking forward to getting the weekend over with.

Reports say fans were sent home before second practice and as their compensation, were given $200 vouchers for merchandise.

In response to the claims, Verstappen very bluntly said: “If I was a fan, I would tear the whole place down.”

This season’s champion will start at the front of the grid in 2nd for Sunday’s race, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc taking pole.

Next weekend will see the 2023 season draw to a close at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with Verstappen approaching the end of another fine year at the wheel.

However, if Las Vegas’ race proves to be National League standard in his eyes, it’s unlikely that the Dutchman will tune in to Barnet vs Oldham Athletic on Wednesday night.
