Four teams, 10 days, one CHL champion.
The 2024 Memorial Cup is set to kick off on Friday. The tournament pits the three champions from the Canadian major junior leagues (OHL, QMJHL, WHL) against one another, along with a team representing the host city. While each league has its own champion, the victor of the Memorial Cup is dubbed the true titleholder of the season.
The tournament dates over 100 years, with the first edition coming in 1919. The competition has expanded since the early days and now brings must-watch entertainment to close out the hockey season.
There are plenty of NHL prospects who are in line to headline this year’s tournament, including a number of first-round selections, potential picks in 2024 and even a handful of stars who will hear their name at the 2025 NHL Draft.

Memorial Cup standings 2024
The four teams will play each other once in a round-robin, totaling three games to determine seeding for the playoffs.
The No. 1 seed advances straight to the championship game while the Nos. 2 and No. 3 teams will play in a semifinal. If needed, there will be a tiebreaker the day before the semifinal game.
Teams earn two points for a win in regulation or overtime but do not earn any points for any sort of loss.

How to watch the Memorial Cup

Where is the Memorial Cup in 2024?
Host city: Saginaw, Mich. Venue: Dow Event Center
Saginaw is the host city for the 2024 Memorial Cup. All games will be played at the Dow Event Center, the home of the Spirit.
This not only marks the first time Saginaw is hosting the event, it is the first time in the 104-year history that Michigan is holding the Memorial Cup. Saginaw won the bid to host the 2024 tournament over Niagara, Sault Ste. Marie and Kingston.
Who is in the Memorial Cup this year?
London Knights
London ran through the OHL playoffs to get a spot in the Memorial Cup.
The Knights went 16-2 in the playoffs to win the J. Ross Robertson Cup as league champion. London swept Oshawa in four games to win its fifth OHL championship. The Knights are making their sixth Memorial Cup appearance since 2005. The team is going for its third Memorial Cup championship.
Dale Hunter’s team is led by a number of high-end NHL prospects, including Easton Cowan (Maple Leafs), Kasper Halttunen (Sharks), Oliver Bonk (Flyers), Denver Barkey (Flyers) and Sam Dickinson (2024 draft eligible).
Drummondville Voltigeurs
Drummondville is appearing in its fourth Memorial Cup after winning the QMJHL playoffs.
The Voltigeurs won their second Gilles-Courteau Trophy after sweeping Baie-Comeau in the final series, going 16-3 in the postseason. Drummondville, coached by Sylvain Favreau, has never won a Memorial Cup, coming up short in its previous three showings at the tournament.
The Voltigeurs are headlined by Ethan Gauthier (Lightning), Maveric Lamoureux (Coyotes), Vsevolod Komarov (Sabres) and Peter Repcik (2024 draft eligible).
Moose Jaw Warriors
Moose Jaw has never played at the Memorial Cup before 2024.
The Warriors make their first appearance at the showcase after winning its first Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champion. The team swept Portland in the final series to clinch their ticket to Saginaw.
Paving the way for the Warriors are NHL prospects such as Brayden Yager (Penguins), Matt Savoie (Sabres), Denton Mateychuk (Blue Jackets) and Jagger Firkus (Kraken).
Saginaw Spirit
Saginaw earned its placement in the Memorial Cup by winning the bid to host the tournament, receiving an automatic bid.
The Spirit finished second in the OHL in points in the regular season before losing to the Knights in the Western Conference Final of the OHL playoffs. While the franchise has Memorial Cup wins, it does not have one since the team moved to Saginaw in 2002.
Top 2024 draft prospect Zayne Parekh is one of many prospects driving the way for the Spirit. In addition, Chris Lazary’s crew boasts Owen Beck (Canadiens), Hunter Haight (Wild), Jorian Donovan (Senators), Matyas Sapovaliv (Golden Knights) and Michael Misa, the potential No. 1 pick in 2025.
Past Memorial Cup champions
While the four-team format has only been around since 1983, the Memorial Cup dates back all the way to 1919.
The three-team format with the three winners of the CHL leagues began in 1972. Since that creation, the WHL has won 19 times, the OHL has won 17 and the QMJHL has won 14.
Out of the active teams, the Oshawa Generals have the most Memorial Cup titles, with five.
