New York Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo is pushing team owner Steve Cohen and the front office to be a buyer prior to the July 30 trade deadline.
“I want to be able to have a voice in this,” Nimmo told Will Sammon of The Athletic.
“I know you’re not going to go my way every time but I want us to have a conversation about it. And I’ll tell you what my perspective is from ground zero, down on the field. It just gives you a different perspective. The more opinions and perspectives you can get, the better a decision that can be made.”
The Mets got off to a 24-35 start, but a 20-10 stretch since then has the team just two-and-a-half games out of a National League wild card spot. Naturally, it’s understandable why Nimmo would want the team to go for it, especially with the playoffs seemingly in reach.
“Any chance that I get, I kind of throw that in there,” Nimmo said regarding his overtures to the front office.
The Mets have an opportunity to get hot in July with 13 of their next 19 games at home. Four of the road games are against the last-place Miami Marlins. So the Mets have a chance to make a real run to get over .500 and put themselves in a better position for a wild-card berth.
New York could use some reinforcements, though, specifically in the bullpen. Joel Sherman of the New York Post called for some moves.
“In an ideal world, the Mets would land two relievers as soon as possible — one would be a lefty and one would provide closing experience in case Diaz remains a train wreck and both would have control beyond this season just in case the Mets are not actually contenders in 2024. Nevertheless, few teams get perfection this time of year.”
Ultimately, the Mets are in a spot to go for it here after a fantastic run. The question is whether the front office agrees and who they end up getting.
