Could Craig Counsell be the next manager of the New York Mets?
The Milwaukee Brewers manager would “welcome the challenge of coming to New York if he and the Mets proved to be a fit,” according to SNY’s Andy Martino.
The Mets are searching for a new manager after firing Buck Showalter earlier this month.
Showalter took over as manager of the Mets ahead of the 2022 campaign and led the club to a 176-148 record in his two seasons at the helm.
New York finished the 2022 campaign with a 101-61 record and Showalter was named Manager of the Year, but the club fell to the San Diego Padres in the National League Wild Card round. The Mets followed that up with a 75-87 finish to the 2023 season and missed the playoffs altogether for the sixth time in seven seasons.
With the Mets being largely uncompetitive over the last decade, there will be a lot of pressure on the next manager of the franchise to restore the club atop the ranks as one of baseball’s best.
Counsell has been manager of the Brewers since 2015 and has led the club to a 707-625 record in his nine seasons at the helm. Milwaukee has been to the postseason in five of the last six years, though it hasn’t reached the NLCS since 2018.
Still, Counsell has a solid track record of getting teams into the playoffs, and that came alongside current Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. The duo led the Brewers into the playoffs four consecutive seasons from 2018-2021 and they could combine in New York to bring the Mets back to prominence.
However, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported Friday that “multiple MLB officials have said they believe it is far from a slam dunk that Stearns is just biding time and will ultimately hire Craig Counsell.”
Additionally, Martino suggested that the Mets “plan to conduct a wide-ranging manager search” and won’t “automatically anoint a particular candidate.”
Counsell’s contract with the Brewers expires on Oct. 31.
